US multinational Halliburton has agreed to admit it destoryed evidence related to its part in the huge 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill, the US Department of Justice announced. Halliburton will pay the maximum fine available, be on probation for three years and continue to cooperate with the government's criminal investigation, a news release by the department said on Thursday. It did not spell out the fine amount. Al Jazeera's Raelyn Johnson reports.

Halliburton getting caught to cover up its mess in the gulf oil spill case. Typical. Halliburton is one of the most corrupt companies out there and i personally believe they should be charged way way more for their actions. Disgusting.

I actually got an amusing picture of the execs from halliburton having to all show up at the probation office every week and have their corporate meetings in front of the probation officer. Then they are all making excuses for peeing dirty because the interns served them poppy seed bagels.

Unfortunately BP shareholders will be the ones paying the price. Can't mess with the former VP's golden parachute.

A maximum fine of, what, a million dollars? Ten million? Still cheaper than actually being on the hook for the damage.

Your disgust for Halliburton resides in the fact it is a private company.

I don't like Halliburton either but not because the government used a private contractor.

Besides, like the federal government is any less corrupt?

The United States federal government is essentially evil.

BP shared culpability as well as Transocean. Kind of a prefect storm of small f-ups that resulted in the spill. Read the Coast Guard/MMI investigation report. Details it all pretty well.

I've personally witnessed DOJ checking up on compliance when a company is on probation, its pretty rigorous and generally has positive results. Haliburton, BP and Transocean all deserve extra scrutiny.

Hopefully this puts to rest the notion in people's brains that companies don't destroy evidence.

We've gone off the deep end everyone. Discussion over. Hyperbole overdose.

It's not my fault you cant deal with the truth..

I have more respect for socialists that admit they're socialists rather than closet socialists such as yourself.

Then again maybe you don't understand socialism?

BP was $1.5 billion and Transocean $400 million. My guess would be Haliburton gets hit somewhere between the two.

And they're still on the hook for some of the damages. Thats currently under litigation as right now.

I wonder what the payoff is, because no one knows exactly how the blowout happened. Certainly none of the joyful folks on this thread who are excited about Halliburton getting busted doing...something.

Up to this point, the blame was placed squarely on BP for not choking off a gas kick and now it's Halliburton's fault? You all know that you can't have it both ways...right?

I wonder what evidence was destroyed. All the physical evidence went down with the rig, which is what caused the wellhead failure, not the blowout.

Not sure anyone is claiming Halliburton caused the blow-out, am pretty sure the investigators know enough to both assign blame AND what to do in the future to lessen it happening again. let's not forget 11 citizens lost their lives so it is more than just academic.

I'm surprised no one went to prison over this. Not even a few months in Club fed.

I read where they are giving a wildlife fund 55million- way more than the fine. Course you can write off 'charitable' donations, not fines.

Obviously someone is trying to lay blame on Halliburton for the 2010 blowout.

According to this article
"On or about May 3, 2010, Halliburton established an internal working group to examine the Macondo well blowout,

Then on
"June 2010, similar evidence was also destroyed in a later incident.

Kinda makes one wonder WTF was destroyed eh?

Halliburton Pleads Guilty To Destroying Evidence In Connection With Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill - Business Insider

It does, but any physical evidence was destroyed with the rig. Which makes me wonder what's in it for Halliburton.

When this case is settled i,ll be setting on my front porch reading about it on my Kindle, watchen the world go by while sippen a cool one.:2wave:

No need to wonder what was destroyed if any of you are willing to do so much at 30 seconds of google searching...

According to the government, Halliburton recommended to BP that the Macondo well contain 21 centralizers, metal collars that can improve cementing, but BP chose to use six.

The government said that, during an internal probe into the cementing after the blowout, Halliburton ordered workers to destroy computer simulations that showed little difference between using six and 21 centralizers.

Halliburton Pleads Guilty To Destroying Gulf Oil Spill Evidence

A centralizer is nothing more than a ring that helps to guide a pipe down so that it can place something more precisely, in this case, the pipe that was to pump the cement down into the well. 21 of them would have allowed the cementing to be more precise, but of course, at the cost of a lot more time spent installing the centralizers.

My guess is that the government overreached in this case...the simulations weren't really germane to identify a cause or causes for the blowout, since they indicated that 6 vs. 21 centralizers wouldn't have compromised safety. But anything related to the disaster becomes evidence, and since Halliburton got rid of this information, it makes them appear that they are hiding something.

Also, they are on the hook for a 200k dollar fine, and volunteered to donate $55,000,000 to National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.

In about two hours I’m gonna pop a cork on a (ever so slightly chilled) bottle of 2008 Francis Ford Coppola,s wineries, Chardonnay. But it will not be consumed on my porch.

Bah, if taking out the cork wastes too much time getting to the joy juice, I just whack the bottle neck on the counter. Quick and efficient.
