"This is Derrick Perry ! He is the hero from today’s stabbing at Walmart , he is the man that took his gun out and risked his own life to save many lives ! Thank you so much Derrick," the post on the Overheard in Traverse City page says, sharing Perry's photo.

I'm pretty sure this is a good guy with a gun.

Nice but for every good guy with a gun story however are a dozen mass shootings that don't get stopped in time.
Yeah. If only we banned guns this stabbing incident never would have happened…or something like that.

Ok, nice anecdote, but guns are still the leading cause of death of children in the United States.
What age range do you define as children? Do you include 16-year-old gang bangers?

Black people continue to face gun homicide rates that are 13 times higher than those of their white counterparts. Similarly, gun deaths remain the leading cause of death among children and teens ages 1-17, with 2,566 young lives lost in 2023—a 2% increase in the death rate compared to 2022. Notably, while the gun homicide rate among Black and Hispanic/Latino children and teens has decreased, it has still doubled over the past decade. The data revealed an 8.6% decrease in gun homicides in 2023, translating to 1,724 fewer homicides compared to the previous year. Despite this positive trend, certain groups remain disproportionately affected. (AI)
Demographics show a large disparity in gun crimes, and deaths. When we address gun issues we need to look at this and address how to correct it.

yes actually. Are criminal "children" included in this stat? What age range is a child.
A child is generally defined as under 18. What is your point, that you are okay with thousands of children dying from gun violence as long as they are shooting each other?

Hey! All of us are somebody's child so every gun death is the death of a child. You have to count like a liberal to understand that.

For every homicide that is solved, there's another that goes unsolved.

That doesn't lead me to believe we should do away with laws prohibiting homicide. Nor does it make me believe we should severely restrict peaceful people from exercising their Constitutional rights and civil liberties.

To be fair, the other side of that equation would be the criminal lifestyle chosen by the poor, oppressed children. I mean, just maybe, the lifestyle should factor in somewhere.

And yet every time they do, like in this instance, it means EVERYTHING to the people saved. Doesnt it?

It happens a lot more than people realize. Bum has a whole blog full of weekly stories where individuals/home owners use their firearms for self defense or to protect their families. And in many of those cases, they dont even fire...just like this man at Walmart. He ended violence just by drawing his firearm. He had legal justification to shoot...but didnt. He "stopped" the threat.

Do you think there is justification to keep firearms from private citizens when it's also proven they save lives? Are gun owners/their families lives less valuable than non-gun owners' lives?

@L88 's point is to deflect. If a person is in a gang... not a kid. If a person is over 16... not a kid.

Who knows how many more deflections we can make.

How many people died before he swung into action? Sounds like he wanted to make sure it was a knife and not another gun before being "brave".

This can be very complicated. For that reason I have provided you with a definition.

CHILD
a: a young person especially between infancy and puberty
a play for both childrenand adults

b: a person not yet of the age of majority (see majority sense 2a)
Under the law she is still a child.

c: a childlike or childish person
He is a child in most business matters.

Consequently, a 55 year old child of a couple is not a child legally... but a child biologically. I know. It is soooo confusing. LOL

.

We get threads like these when this happens once in a blue moon but mass shootings it's thoughts and prayers time, and how dare you suggest guns are tools of violence.

I'm pretty sure you are correct. No gun and the guy probably wouldn't be in custody.

How many assumptions did it take before you arrived at that conclusion?

Props to the guy with the gun.

But the guy that amazes me is the guy with the shopping cart! Now that took some major stugats!
