There is a great moment in the Stephen King novel SALEM'S LOT in which King describes the old Marsten house in the middle of the Maine town of Jerusalem's Lot which eventually becomes the center of evil in the town. King gives us the brief history of the house and we learn that a fire once swept some of the town and threatened the old house which was right in its path until almost magically the winds came up and shifted the direction of the fire when it hit the borders of the grounds sparring the old house. And in doing that, the future fate of the two and its inhabitants was sealed.

Several movies feature scenes where the writers demonstrate a sea change in events when the winds change - often in battle scenes. Its a metaphor used to great effect.

In Washington DC today, the winds have changed - dramatically. For many years following the Gingrich led GOP take over of the House and then the Al Gore defeat, Democrats were convinced that gun control cost them their majority control. It was never really proven - but it was accepted just the same so it became something of a cautionary tale for Democrats to discourage them for taking strong stands on guns.

But today we see House Democrats sitting in their own chamber demanding a vote they know they will lose on universal background checks for all gun purchases and a "no fly/no buy" rule for other gun purchases.

So what happened to cause these winds to change?

The easy answer is Sandy Hook and Orlando and all the other gun massacres in between. But the real answer is Dems in the House believe that their party is set to win big in November keeping the White House and retaking the majority in the Senate. But almost everyone has written off the House going Democratic. Guns could be the key to changing that.

The Democratic Party and those in the House who are Democrats have made a very calculated decision that they can win by exposing thirty to forty Republicans in purple districts in swing states when they will have to vote what they believe is the wrong way on universal background checks and the no buy/no fly provisions. They have made a calculation that they can exploit that GOP vote and when Trump goes down to a stinging defeat in the fall - that extra push will also cause enough GOP House members to lose that it will give them the magic number of 218 to shift that chamber also.

The winds of change would have to be powerful to do that as few thought it was a real possibility before now. And the Dems believe the winds of change have weakened the power of the NRA and they no longer can shift elections and cause them to go down in defeat.

But that is what the House sit in is all about and that is goal of its end game. And it shows that what is happening here is a tremendously seismic shift in politics in this nation - not just gun politics which have been quiet for almost 20 years, but the greater politics as well.

The measure of the success of the current Democratic House sit in will not come in any vote in the House. It will only come in November when we see if this strategy paid off. If the Dems win - gun politics will never be the same for a very long time - at least a generation. If the Dems lose - we could see a return to the days of relative silence on gun issues and the NRA will again ride high.

And the Democratic Party - like the fictional Marsten House in Jerusalem's Lot in Maine - stand before the flames.

It is certainly true that the winds of change do not need visible rational understanding. They require only change. And in a country that puts people like Sanders or Trump so close to leadership? Hey, any of those slimy, nasty, scary things can happen.

The magic number is actually 40, as long as the GOP has 40 senators gun control is DOA. But that doesnt matter it would take a massive Hillary win combined with a non-showing from the 3rd party vote for the dems to even get close to the house.

through the year of 2013 seems like i herd time and time again on the liberal media a pole cited that said 94% of all Americans wanted more gun control.
then we had the mid term elections in november of 2013 and the anti gunners got their ashes hauled,if the left wants to cahnge the 2ed amendment let them follow the CONSTITUTION and follow the law,see ARTICLE 5 of that august document, but no they want to circumvent the CONSTITUTION when they choose to.
it will take 38 states to ratify a change and they know they can not get that number of states to agree ,so they sit on the floor and kick and scream like children, this si not 1968 ,we the people know the law.
so by your post i assume you must not thank much of our CONSTITUTION ,or the law, again see ARTICLE 5 ,that is the law of this great REPUBLIC.

No change to the Constitution is necessary for simply things like universal background checks for all purchases.

The winds have changed. The Democrats are no longer concerned with overtly displaying their contempt for the Constitution.

Democrats focus on a gay nightclub instead of the massacre that happens every day in Chicago.

Not enough white folks getting shot up ... or .... Black lives don't really matter?

The center of evil WAS what was left in the House after the Republicans cleared out

Petty, partisan hacks who have nothing but contempt for our Constitution and who cry about gun control while ignoring the weekly body count coming out of Democrat strongholds like Chicago and Detroit

It's amazing how liberals have been so misled on gun issues. Its as if they think there are no laws on the books relating to gun purchasing, they have been misled into believing that machine guns are available to American citizens, that huge numbers of people are killed by the so called "civilian assault rifles", and that taking guns from law abiding citizens would prevent attacks like in Orlando. NONE of those things are true!

According to FBI stats, gun violence actually dropped after the 'assault weapon ban' of 1994-2004 ended. These so called "assault weapons" make up less than 1% of gun crime.

Next, military rifles are fully automatic(machine guns), but they ARE NOT LEGAL TO PURCHASE IN AMERICA..... In other words, you cannot buy a fully automatic military weapon if you are a citizen. The guns you can buy do not operate like military weapons. They fire 1 shot at a time, as opposed to 20, 30, 50 or 100 rounds with the pull of a trigger like REAL military weapons do. Lastly, that Orlando attack was a failure of govt on all levels. He had 3 full hours to kill people. He could be killed or injured 100 people in that amount of time with a bow and arrow for heavens sake! He didn't need a semi auto rifle for a 3 hour massacre! If he wasn't able to get a gun, he could've easily taken a homemade bomb in a backpack and killed even more people in less time!

We already have waiting periods, laws that prevent felons and mentally deranged people from buying guns.

Orlando isn't about gun rights, how can people be so misguided that they think that's the main problem there(not terrorism).
