The camp commander said the two Saudis and a Yemeni interred at Gitmo had killed themselves in "an act of asymmetric warfare waged against us" when they hanged themselves.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/5068606.stm.

This is such an amazing statement I don't even know where to begin. A new level of government doublespeak by the Bush Administration? A new height to which the Govt will spin news two justify illegitimate activity? A new reach of reality modification?

Sure, we need to keep foreign nationals locked away in dungeons without charges or hearings because they are waging "asymmetric warfare" against us.

They are not criminals, they are POWs and that is the only charge against them that matters. You keep them locked away until they are no longer a threat. If that means that they are kept under lock and key until they die, then so be it.

Are you kidding me? They are human beings, some of whom have done nothing wrong. I am not saying that all there are not criminals who we should not be afraid of, but the US has already released a lot from there citing that it made some mistakes in arresting them and one of those who killed himself was slated to be released as well because he wasn't a threat anymore, or it was determined that he was not a threat to begin with - can't remember. The point is, there is something wrong in any situation when it causes people to commit suicide.

It would be naive to think that these guys did this to end their suffering. It was obviously a publicity stunt. Why else would three guys do it together?

Ya I was stunned too. I thought it was just plain old suicide.

It's a pretty far "stretch" of reality to call this an act of war, I mean, really.

Listen to you. You can hypothesize why they did it, but to call anyone naive who thinks that they did it to end their suffering is a stretch. It could have been a combination of both. You have no idea what it is like to be a prisoner at Gitmo, do you? So you wouldn't know the first thing about what they went through. Personally for me, I would rather die than live in a hell hole like that and be treated like crap.

I think they would have done better to do it back to back to back.

This way it gets more coverage, and stuff.

Not too smart...

Some individual detainees have attempted suicide over a dozen times.

More double speak..
Colleen Graffy, deputy assistant U.S. secretary of state for public diplomacy, told the British Broadcasting Corp. that the deaths at the U.S.-run camp in Cuba were a "good P.R. move to draw attention."

Graffy also told the BBC the deaths were "a tactic to further the jihadi cause."

It turns out one of the three was due to be released, but did not know it.
One of the three men who committed suicide at the US prison camp at Guantanamo Bay was due to be released - but did not know it, says a US lawyer.

Mark Denbeaux, who represents some of the foreign detainees said the man was among 141 prisoners due to be released.

He said the prisoner was not told because US officials had not decided which country he would be sent to.

Good lord! Over a dozen times?! I think someone's heart's not in it. I mean, it shouldn't be that hard.

If they were POWs they would be bound by the Geneva Convention. No, they're "Enemy Combatants" held and tortured without being charged in a war without end: the so-called "War on Terror"

And you wonder why they hate us?

Nah. Read the Koran. It is very clear and informative about such things.

Claiming torture is straight out of the terrorist manual as well.

Martyrdom is to be desired as well.

I'm pretty sure guards try to prevent them from doing this for the obvious reasons (read: this whole thread).

I was actually kinda surprised they got away with it. I wouldn't be shocked if every cell had a cam in it, probably even a microphone.

It was, you can't figure it out or something?

It's act of propaganda, a major tool in war.

Well I'm sure they do too, but over a dozen times? You think they would have succeeded once.

Kind of a one shot deal isn't it? Wouldn't have been safer to take out an add in the WSJ? Remind me not to hire their PR manager.

Wow. Is that true? The guy wasn't even guilty.

The Commander in the article I quoted said these guys were "committed" and had killed themselves in "an act of asymmetric warfare waged against us". "They have no regard for life, either ours or their own. I believe this was not an act of desperation, but an act of asymmetrical warfare waged against us."

And he's describing a guy who was supposed to be released? Something's not right here.

We don't know that any of the three were guilty or innocent, they were never charged with anything and were not POWs.

They are POWs. They're having to be let go cause they don't qualify as POWs and people here (read: liberals) are throwing a fit cause they haven't been charged with anything. Guarantee you'll see half the people we let go fighting our troops again.

Why don't we just call them POWs and hold them as POWs under the Geneva conventions?

Tell you what, once I run the country, I'll look into it.;)

Your assuming these guys have all been lifted straight off the battlefield and into GBAY. Thats just not the case. Most have been handed over to us by the Pakistani and Iraqi forces and for most of them we have no idea what they have done. Sure, its without question some of those in GBAY are murderous terrorists but that doesn't apply to them all.

In the absence of any procedures to prove your innocence its little wonder people are driven to suicide, indeed the fact we have admitted one of the guys was totally innocent and was about to be released anyway only goes to show the 'act of war' remarks for what they are..desperate spin by a desperate administration.

And for the record (before all you Bush lovers step in) I ain't saying we should release them all with no Q's asked. I would like to see us gather the evidence, bring these people before the courts and let the guilty face the justice they deserve.

Prove it.

We don't have to prove the guilt of POWs.

POWs don't have trials.

Maybe we need to change the way we handle combatants that are not wearing uniforms.

We should not take them prisoner.
Just kill in the field, even if they do try and surrender.

I’m sure that will lessen the amount of people taken to Gito.
