JERUSALEM - Nearly 40 percent of West Bank settlements are built on private land seized from Palestinians, an Israeli watchdog group said Tuesday — challenging the government's long-standing assertion the communities were built only on unclaimed territory.

Citing leaked Israeli military documents, Peace Now unveiled a report it said showed settlements were built on Palestinian property seized by the army long after Israel's Supreme Court outlawed the practice in 1979.

"We are talking about an institutional land grab," Dror Etkes, a settlement expert with the group, told reporters in Jerusalem.

So who's gonna be the first person to step up and justify this?

and back to reality. Not exactly "big news" other than an isreali organisation has made the claim. The Palestinians have been saying it for decades.

And add to that the law and practice that was struck down, that if land was deemd abandoned then the goverment could take it.. what does the IDF do, bar palestinians from accessing thier land and wupti the land is abandoned and hello new settlement!

But of course pro Isreal people will deny or ignore this.

Yeah Israel somewhere down the line got a bit naughty. Israel bulldozing Palestinian homes without permission or compensation, I mean is that the hallmark of a liberal democracy? Claiming the West Bank, Gaza Strip and Sinai is theirs because "God said", is that the sign of a liberal democracy?

I mean I'm not exactly pro-Palestinian, but I don't know why people can excuse some of Israel's behaviours. But of course a government can get away with alot of things while "at war".

Those West Bank settlements should never be there in the first place and if Israel truely wants peace, they are going to have to go.

Interesting no-one has stepped up to the mark to defend this though.
