Grocery store employees are emergency workers

Minnesota and Vermont will classify grocery store employees as emergency workers

It's become all too clear how much our society is dependent on the lowest earning employees to keep coming to work, despite serious risk of illness. It's time to raise wages for all grocery store employees, and to implement increased benefits and better working conditions immediately.

At least one company is showing their appreciation for their employees: Walmart.

Walmart plans to hire 150,000 people to meet increased demand during the coronavirus crisis and will pay out $365 million in bonuses, the US retail giant said.

"These roles will be temporary at first, but many will convert to permanent roles over time," it said.

The firm added it would pay $300 bonuses to full-time employees and $150 to those part-time.

Walmart said Thursday it wanted to reward them "for their hard work and dedication to serving customers in a time of an unprecedented national health crisis."

It also plans to speed up payment of the next quarterly bonus payments, which will take its payout to nearly $550 million.

I'm glad that they're doing so, their employees surely deserve it. I only hope that others follow suit.

Yeah, but you're getting a raise. It has to be paid for somehow.

Our store had its biggest week of sales in its history. And then it broke that record the next day. They can afford to raise wages without price gouging.

And just think, without a Farmer someone like you might have died a long time ago?

So a boxboy should make how much now?

Night stocking already pays more than the day shift. But I think everyone should get more. Because many make significantly less than 15 an hour, and that's not fair at all under current circumstances.

There's a foothold there for unions now. "Um, yeah. We're not putting ourselves at risk every day for **** pay and no benefits so that you assholes can shelter at home eating doritos and bitching that the right kind was sold out."

We need some 5 year plans, and have a committee to decide how many grocery store workers we need as well. Seriously though they can quit if they don’t like it.

Or the immigrants hired for the harvest.

That's because of our welfare system(Late stage socialism)

Do you think I resent them? They do important jobs to earn money to send back to their families. We are all part of the same supply chain which feeds America. I'm proud to work alongside them.
