Complete article title: Greg Abbott’s top consumer attorneys built a $5.4M case against Donald Trump, but it never happened

AUSTIN — The state’s consumer protection division, working for then-Attorney General Greg Abbott, sought permission in May 2010 to pursue what it believed was a strong case to sue Donald Trump and Trump University for bilking Texas taxpayers out of more than $2.6 million.

But that lawsuit was never filed.

Instead, the investigation Abbott had opened into the now-defunct real estate training program and Trump, now the presumptive Republican nominee for president, was dropped and Trump University agreed to cease operations in Texas.

The former deputy director of Abbott’s Consumer Protection Division now alleges that the attorney general office’s decision to quash the lawsuit against Trump — later a major donor to Abbott’s campaign — was a political move that left Texas consumers “high and dry.”

I had not realised politicians could be bought for so little
A few years later, the AP reported, Abbott received $35,000 in donations from the billionaire real estate mogul for his successful gubernatorial bid.

Another investigation into Trump University was quashed by Florida's Attorney General Pam Bondi. When asked for documents available under Florida's public documents law, Scott Maxwell of the Orlando Sentinel, received a 'few' pages. As Maxwell writes in his column, "Perhaps they thought no one would really look at them.If so, they were wrong.
8,491 pages raise more flags about Bondi's Trump money

Three days after the Orlando Sentinel wrote a story in 2013 about Floridians who felt scammed by a Trump affiliate, Trump's charitable foundation gave $25,000 to one of Bondi's campaign committees.
<snip>
Bondi's office originally claimed it had received "no complaints" about the Trump University (Page 3,229) since she took office.

Later, a staffer said: "Under this administration, we have received one complaint regarding Donald Trump, Trump University or Trump Entrepreneur Institute (page 4,268).

Later still, a staffer said two (page 5,142).

Yet another wrote: "Just so everyone is aware, we have 100 complaints about The Trump Group." (Page 1,733), though that August 2013 message didn't cite a timeframe..

Re: Greg Abbott’s top consumer attorneys built a $5.4M case against Donald Trump, but

Why did Trump get involved in Trump University? That if he is a billionaire and successful businessman he would have no need getting into shady business ventures like Trump University.

Also if he is a billionaire he could have easily make good and apologizes because Trump University would then be a very small part of his business ventures. Instead he is now accused of giving donations to prosecutors so they should drop the cases against Trump University.

What a HUGE waste of taxpayer dollars. An 8000-page investigation. 100 consumer complaints. Omfg. Just imagine. Ohhhh, the humanity. What a sad tribute to state investigatory processes.

How many complaints should be made before fraud investigations start?

Well, now, let's ask the FBI. Before they will investigate an Internet fraud, the amount lost must be $40,000 per individual. TU's comprehensive course was under $400. What a waste of state resources. 8000 pages.

What $400?, and these people are expecting Wharton style education or it was a scam?

Get real..

If this is the truth then this entire Trump U scandel just lost ALL its credibility..

Ahh, so the key is to defraud large numbers of people for small amounts of money.

The POINT is that anyone thinking their $400 is buying them a university degree is a complete and total idiot. And NYis idiotic going after them and, no doubt, spending millions because they use the name university. ABSURD.

It wasn't an 8 000-page investigation just an 8 000-page document dump. The question is why they used such tricks if there was nothing to hide? Also you can’t just market yourself as honest if you run for politcial office instead you have to prove it through your action. Like for example don’t give donations to prosecutors investigating your businesses.

Her office took about four weeks to respond and then finally did so with a massive document dump — thousands of pages, many of which were exchanges with the press about why they weren't investigating now and stressing they never had. A copy of an email I sent back in 2013 was included 39 different times.

All told, they provided 8,491 pages of records.

Perhaps they thought no one would really look at them.

Re: Greg Abbott’s top consumer attorneys built a $5.4M case against Donald Trump, but

So he over charged for materials that could be found elsewhere for 20-40% less?

Is that the extent of this complaint?

No the real complaint was that it was a bait-and-switch scheme. Get people intersted by offering cheap courses then try to sell education progams that could cost up to 35 000 dollars. That at a university that didn't have the right to call it self a university, also with alot of broken promises. Wikipedia has a summary about Trump University with a lot of links to news article and other sources.

It was an 8,000 page document dump by Bondi representing her investigation. Not a Trump Dump. Haha. Interesting that Trump has admitted that he donated the money to her campaign in an illegal way.

We may have TWO candidates on their way to an indictment.

He is accused of a lot of things. Donations to political campaigns is just one. Somehow giving a few bucks to a candidate implies bribery, but giving a few hundred thousand to a SOS husband for speaking does not.

Donald Trump illegally donating money to the prosecutor’s campaign makes things even more crazy.

Because according to Donald Trump he is a billionaire and successful businessmen. So Trump University should only be a small part of his business ventures.

Also Donald Trump claims that he is really good at hiring the best people. I assume that it includes lawyers.

Trump have also claimed that Trump University offered really great education.

So why didn’t he then just trust his lawyers and the judicial system? That it would be stupid and unnecessary to do shady things like illegally donating money to the prosecutor if Donald Trumps claims are true.

Prosecutorial descretion sucks, doesn't it?

And as an honest businessman Trump naturally had to take advantage of that, but only in small amounts so the FBI will not intervene. Brilliant reasoning...
