Paterson said layoffs in the 200,000-worker force could begin in mid-November. At least one public employees union had already filed a claim against Paterson for his threats to start layoffs.

"We have a binding agreement with the administration prohibiting layoffs or even the threat of layoffs for the duration of the administration," said Stephen Madarasz of the Civil Service Employees Association union. "That's an agreement already upheld by the courts."

Earlier this week, the union filed a labor charge against the administration with the Public Employment Relations Board over just the threat of layoffs.

Paterson has said he would have to resort to layoffs because the unions refused to delay raises or take other action to provide $250 million in savings toward the state's multibillion deficits.
Bravo Governor, Bravo.

Well, if this is found to actually be in breach of the contract the guy in the article mentioned, this will probably just make things worse with all the litigation that will follow. "For the duration of this administration." Maybe Paterson should step down, thus ending his administration? :D

Litigation and the contract aside, it sounds as though the cuts are the right thing to do. That's the problem when getting into bed with unions ... they'll turn on you quick as any other enemy because they have their own agenda. Fire them, tie this up in the courts and Paterson may be out of office before it even comes up on the docket.

Unions are at the Core of many economic disasters in many States and the Federal Government.

When Jerry Brown was the California clown in Chief, he made it possible for the Unions to put the State on the verge of desperation the same as New York, and now he wants a chance to kill off what's left here which isn't much. The jobless rate here is 12.4% as of Aug. and getting worse.

We need to break the Unions they allow illegal aliens to join the try to protect them. What BS.

Many of those Union people in Government are the worst, laziest most unqualified, rude, ignorant, workers in the world.

The Gov. seems to finally get it.

Here in California our RINO in Chief the Dumninator has made weak atempts to get rid of the dead weight but not permanently like is needed.

A few years ago, I had a product/service that I was able to sell commercial and residential real estate owners for about an average of $2,500 per month for a five-year contract term.

However, if I sold it in Illinois (part of my territory), the cost went up to $6,700 per month, to account for the cost of HAVING to use union labor for installation.

Needless to say, I did very little business in Illinois.

THAT is what is wrong with the economy in Michigan, New York, and California as much as anything, and it's also the reason that those economies might never return.
