The Democrats supported the Civil Rights Act. The Republican nominee, Goldwater, did not.

That's reality.
The Supreme Court ruled segregation was unconstitutional. Conservatives like Goldwater still insisted that states like Mississippi should have the right to segregate. The familiar "states rights."
