LOS ANGELES — California Gov. Gavin Newsom easily survived a recall election Tuesday in a closely watched race that drew national attention and campaign visits from President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, the Associated Press projected less than an hour after polls closed in the state. With 62 percent of ballots counted — and more than two-thirds of them saying "no" to the recall — Newsom addressed his supporters in Sacramento. "No is not the only thing that was expressed tonight," the governor said. "I want to focus on what we said yes to as a state. We said yes to science. We said yes to vaccines. We said yes to ending this pandemic. "I'm humbled and grateful to the millions and millions of Americans who exercised their fundamental right to vote and expressed themselves so overwhelmingly by rejecting the division, by rejecting the cynicism, by rejecting so much of the negativity that's defined our politics in this country," he added. Preliminary exit polls suggested the very issue that recall proponents had hoped would unseat Newsom — the pandemic — was the one that helped propel him to victory. More than two-thirds (69 percent) said they supported the state’s mask mandates for students.

Californians wisely decided that they didn't want a Donald Trump clone-candidate - conservative talk show host Larry Elder - to be their Governor.

Elder is typical GOP crazy - denies the existence of systemic racism, opposes gun control and abortion rights, wants to abolish the minimum wage and pledged to overturn COVID-19 mask and vaccine requirements in schools and elsewhere.

It was Elder abuse.

Good for Newsom. I don't even care for the guy but Elder is human garbage. An obnoxious, Trump panty sniffing misogynistic conspiracy theorist.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAAaaaaaa!!

This kind of nonsense is kind of a tough sell in California.

The Trump is just so weak.

The lib'ruls own them.

Jonathan Martin has an interesting take on this in the New York Times.

Newsom’s Anti-Trump Recall Strategy Offers Republicans a Warning for 2022

California Democrats were able to nationalize the vote — thanks to an avalanche of money, party discipline and, above all, an easily demonized opponent.

It's easy to run against Trump and mini-Trumps when they are still exhibiting 'batshit crazy' characteristics. The GOP's attacks on Biden are mostly ineffectual modern-day 'tan suit' criticisms such as easily discounted accusations of dementia.

How would've the election turned out had Elder been a Mitt Romney? Or even a Mitch McConnell? If they can survive the primaries, Rep candidates don't need to act too far away from the far right to beat Dems labelled as libs.

Then he'll pick up the Gingrich talking points playbook and say "Extremists" when he says "liberals".

McConnell would not have stood a chance.

But a Romney or a Cheney or a Kinzinger could have been worth competition.

The quality of GOP candidates must improve in 2022.

The California voters wouldn't elect a McConnell....they might elect someone like Mitt Romney, but McConnell...no and that is a hard no.

It doesn't bode well for the Republican Party that Elder, instead of someone like Faulconer (who quite successfully ran CA's last "nice" large city), was their front-runner.

I stated in the other “ recall thread” Newsome would win easily. I was surprised they could even get enough signatures to even get the recall to a vote. Cali won’t vote Republican again in my lifetime.

What is factually wrong about his positions?

Therein lies the reason California is declining.

All republicans did was waste a bunch of taxpayer money. And that includes for republicans.

It'll be viewed by those Republican politicians as a smart investment if it galvanizes their base to re-elect them.
