Gore's 'Truth' restricted at schools

FEDERAL WAY - The school board in this suburb south of Seattle has restricted showings of Al Gore's movie on global warming, including requiring that it be balanced with an adequate opposing viewpoint.

The board also required Superintendent Tom Murphy to approve when the former vice president's film, "An Inconvenient Truth," can be presented.

The decision was sparked by complaints from parents who said their child was taking the film as fact after viewing it at school.

"Condoms don't belong in school, and neither does Al Gore. He's not a schoolteacher," said Frosty Hardison, a parent of seven who doesn't want the film shown at all.

"The information that's being presented is a very cockeyed view of what the truth is," Hardison told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. "The Bible says that in the end times everything will burn up, but that perspective isn't in the DVD

Yes, the opposing view, I think I remember something in the movie about there not being a single article in a peer reviewed scientific journal that presented evidence to refute the evidence for global warming, or present anything to the contrary. What opposition, maybe when they learn about gravity they should give them some room to the opposing view.
 

I have no issue with the opposing view being presented. In fact, I think that would be an excellent idea. The thing with the article linked is that it was clear that the parent complaining wasn't really interested in presenting the opposing view...he was a bible-thumping right-winger complaining that his kid was being exposed to any critical thought.
 
The problem with responding to global warming or peak oil is that people are predisposed not to want to hear it. A proper response to global warming will require people to make serious and uncomfortable lifestyle changes. So presenting the opposite view is fine and indeed I'm all for it, but doing so will basically halt any political will towards stopping global warming.

While most people agree that climate change is happening they disagree on whether or not and how much humans have caused that and how much or how little if anything humans can change what might be a cyclical occurance.

Had you even bothered to read my post you'd realize I wasn't attacking anybody. Only asking a question which you've failed to awnser and have obviously avoided. Are they attacking Al-Gores movie because they believe it's full of lies...or are they saying that global warming is actually "God's" work?
 
Global warming as it stands is still in debate. I can understand the parent that doesn't want the film shown, but I don't agree with him.

If the problem is that there are no opposing view points shown, then so be it. Get the opposing view points (if there are any) and show them along with it as long as they are scientific and not "God created global warming".

IMO, it appears this parent is just a bible-thumping activist that doesn't want anything liberal to be shown regarding Global Warming or just doesn't like Al-Gore. I have been wrong before on people, so maybe I am with this guy, but that is the first impression I get from this article.

Regardless of what I think about the parent, it is his right to have opposing view points shown in an area of science that we do not have all the facts to and there are opposing scientific viewpoints to Al-Gores movie.

I think the movie is very "sensational" and could actually unnecessarily traumatize young viewers with it's doom and gloom approach and I'm not sure young viewers should be shown the movie in school as a presentation of fact and things to come.

The movie received a PG Rating. Showing a movie such as that in school requires that parents sign a permission slip. If the parents don't want their kids to see it, they don't have to sign the permission slip.

You have a right as a parent not to have your child see this movie if you wish at school.

I disagree with you about the doom and gloom approach of the movie, however, it is the parents right to parent their child and not allow them to see this movie at school.
 
Its really great to see reson prevail and the school district take a stand against that nut job Gore and his fiction film.....

There have been a lot of climate changes in my area. Let's see, last winter it was very cold, then as spring approached, it seemed to get warmer. By summer, it was very hot. I took my kids to the swimming pool all summer long. By late September it started to cool off and by November, we were having some actual cold snaps. Then winter came and the snow began to fly again. Today I have an inch of ice on my driveway. But I am told that spring will come again in April and May and that warmer days will arrive. We'll see what happens. It's almost like the climate is always changing.

IT is clear you want to continue to misrepresent what global warming or climate change is. Global warming does not mean everything is getting hotter.

But are people causing it? Or is it just a natural shift in the Earth's climate? Your video doesn't really address that. I haven't seen his movie, but he is speaking at a college in Sioux Falls so I might have to go listen to him. I'll get back to you on that.
 

I'm simply adressing the notion some people have that because they dont see it happening it's not really there or that some entity("God") is responsible for it.

It just shows that they don't comprehend the issue. People like this think only in terms of 30 second sound bites....because they don't take the time the read anything of substance. Its really too bad.....because they really show no respect or responsibility for future generations.....for them...its all about how it affects them personally.....sad.
 

I don't remember his explicitly stating that it is caused by humans. What he does do is provide you with the relation between CO2 levels and temperature, and the information of fossil fuel CO2 releases and the total CO2 levels in all previous ages, and elsewhere in the earth ecosystem.

That video does omit something, that I believe he state, that in all the previous warm periods the glaciers on Greenland and Antarctica have never melted. The current should be safe, however, there have been three recent events that are worrisome. One, is that warm water animals have been found in the very far north, on the island of Svalvard. Second, that for the last three years there haven’t been any icebergs in the North Atlantic. Third that there seems to be more fresh water in the north Atlantic against Greenland than there should be. If it gets warm enough in the North Atlantic, and enough of the glaciers on Greenland melt, it could cause cooling of Europe as the ocean current weakens. The Southern hemisphere would continue to warm, while the Northern hemisphere would see cooling.

That reason is frequently used to ridicule Global Warming, but it doesn’t seem so ridiculous now that how that could occur and why has been more explained.
