GOP Senator Says Voter Suppression Is A ‘Great Idea’

Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.)

11/16/18
Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) appeared to endorse voter suppression during a campaign stop this month, saying efforts to undermine voting among liberals at certain colleges would be a “great idea.” “And then they remind me that there’s a lot of liberal folks in those other schools who maybe we don’t want to vote,” Hyde-Smith can be heard telling a small crowd of young people outside her campaign bus in a video taken Nov. 3 and posted on online Thursday. “Maybe we want to make it just a little more difficult. And I think that’s a great idea.” Hyde-Smith, who was appointed to the Senate in April following the retirement of Thad Cochran, faces Democrat Mike Espy in a Nov. 27 runoff election. The Trump-backed Republican also came under fire last weekend for apparent racist remarks, joking with a crowd about attending a public hanging.

Rather than campaign on the issues, this GOP candidate is tossing out racial dog-whistles at campaign rallies.

She can get away with that crazy racism because she knows she is probably going to win.

Mississippi, you have a rare opportunity to show the world that you are not such a backwards state. Your next-door neighbor did it last year; it's your turn now!

Someone from GA calling Mississippi backwards? lol. I live in Georgia as well, the most liberal city in Georgia. I find it to be more backwards than both Alabama and Mississippi.

Is there anyone on the left with a sense of humor? Anyone that doesn't get offended over everything and anything?

That's a bit of an overstatement, don't you think? Georgia is a pink state, or more precisely, a red state with some blue dots. Mississippi has a blue area in the northwest part of the state, but those votes are rarely enough to win statewide. We'll see if a miracle happens, but I'd put those odds south of 1% right now.

EDIT:

One of your posts is not like the other one.

Is there anyone on the right who doesn't have to pretend she didn't mean exactly what she stated and that was intended as a joke?

Anyone with even a shred of intellectual honesty?

I am not the one who is joking. The woman from MS was joking.

More Yankees move down to the Atlanta area, bringing their ****ty politics with them. They ruin their cities by voting for democrats, then move south and vote the same way. We are lucky we are not going to have a socialist pig as our governor, this time around.

Racist dog whistle? Dogs vote in Mississippi? And they vote Democrat? Are you thinking of Wasserman?

The Huffpo headline was : GOP Senator Says Voter Suppression Is A ‘Great Idea’
But:
The Salon headline was : GOP Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith jokes about voter suppression in video: “I think that’s a great idea”
The Washington Times headline was : Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith under fire for voter suppression comments; campaign said it was a joke
WLOX TV station said : Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, Espy campaign respond to video of her joking about voter suppression

But like Huffpo the Washington Post headline was : GOP senator: It’s a ‘great idea’ to make it harder for ‘liberal folks’ to vote.
No surprise there.
It wasn't until you read the story do they say ...
In an email to The Washington Post, Scallan said Hyde-Smith’s comments about voting came on Nov. 3 while the senator was “talking to four freshmen at Mississippi State University about an idea to have polling places on college campuses.”
“That’s what she said was a great idea,” Scallan wrote. “Someone pointed out that college campuses were liberal and that’s when she made the joke about not wanting everyone to vote. That was a joke. The polling places on college campuses is what she said was a great idea.”
The video supports that version.
No dogs were harmed in the filming of that video.

Refresh my memory. Which neighboring state and what happened last year?

Yeah Atlanta is such a horrible city. Now remind me...

I live in Georgia as well, the most liberal city in Georgia.

Why exactly did you choose to move to Decatur? Why not just move out to the country?

No, you're the one desperately pretending that she was joking when she clearly wasn't.

Meh. It's what you do.
I am not pretending anything. The woman was joking. I speak clearly, and directly. You don't have to misinterpret my intentions because I am telling them to you now and am always glad to provide clarity if you do not understand.

Why would I want to move out of the country I love. It is the left that hates America. I would move to SC in a heartbeat but will have to wait until I retire. I spend half my time in Hilton Head and plan on retiring there. Now I reside in Athens, not ****ty Atlanta area.

Your blind hatred for Atlanta is so amusing.

In terms of political tactics, she's correct. When your party is on the road to becoming a minority and your power is slipping, discouraging the growing party from voting is a good way to cling to what power you still have for as long as possible.

When it comes to power, if it's cheat or lose it, most people cheat.

No, she was clearly not joking, and you're clearly desperately pretending that she was as some soft of self-defense mechanism.

Reality: it can be scary!

Here's what I genuinely don't get: why do you hate America to it's very core?
