GOP Retains Duke Cunningham's House Seat
Wednesday, June 07, 2006

A former Republican congressman beat his Democratic rival early Wednesday for the House seat once held by jailed Randy "Duke" Cunningham, a race closely watched as a possible early barometer of next fall's vote.

Republican Brian Bilbray emerged victorious after a costly and contentious special election race against Democrat Francine Busby, a local school board member.

Well, there will be a face-off again in November most likely by the same two people. It was very, very close though, in a predominantly republican district. Too close for most Republican Analysts tastes.

In one of the most Republican districts and a special election
Republicans spent $11 million
Democrats $4.7 million
Can they afford to keep spending that kind of money?

Brian Bilbray ran as a progressive.
He was instrumental in developing San Diego County's progressive initiatives regarding environmental protection, pollution control, and economic development.

The only reason this district was even competitive in the first place was because of Duke Cunningham. It's still a very heavily Republican district.

For arepublican to have won only so marginally in a "solid" republican district is actually quite a loss for the republican party.

He won by 9 points... that is pretty convincing....A lot of dems thought she would win because of the Cunningham scandal.....Didn't happen.......In addition your candidate is a nut case.........She thinks non citizens should be allowed to vote..........She said so........

I would not bet the house on her in November if I were you.....

How much do Republicans usually win by in that district?

Nope. What's your point?

She claims she meant to say that you didn't have to be a citizen to help with the campaign, and there's no reason to assume she's lying.

So far I haven't heard anyone on this forum do that...except you.

Yeah, right and Jefferson did not steal $90,000.00 either:rofl

Even if she did believe what you claim she believes, why on earth would she say it publicly, in an anti-immigrant district, a week before the election? There's no logical reason to not take her at her word that she simply misspoke.

How the hell could she ever make a mistake like that? Its amazing how you liberals will just write that off as she just mis spoke...................

I told you, she does not know her *** from first base........

Umm, because she's a human being, not a mindless cog in The Evil Liberal Entity. Have you read the transcript? Given the context, it doesn't seem like it would be particularly hard to misspeak like that.

You didn't answer my question: If she really believes what you claim she believes, what possible reason would she have to say it publicly in an anti-immigration district a week before the election?

Umm...it was 49-45, mostly because of last-minute advertising...but hey, 4 points 9 points....tomato, tomat-o.

"You can all help--you don't need papers for voting, you don't need to be a registered voter to help." That is what she said...she said they can help her get elected. Way to misquote.

If a Conservative came out with those comments you would be all over him like white on rice..........

I don't know, you are going to have to ask her......Oh wait she has been asked.she miss spoke.......:rofl

My bad on the points, you are right............

Hey I never quoted her but do you think what she said is OK?

Yes, I do think what she said is completely ok. They do not need to be citizens to help her in her campaign. They can go out and canvas. They can show their support in mass rallies. They cannot vote though and any insinuation as such is completely false, whether it be made by her, or the Republicans.

The fact that she said that immigrants could help her win election can be attacked, but not the fact that they should be able to vote, because she did not say that.

well if her statment is ok why did she back off from it and say she miss spoke? Why didn't she stand by it?

Because she was being attacked left and right by the GOP attack machine for the statement and if she did not back down from it, it would appear horrible. She can't just say, you are misquoting me, you are misquoting me, because that doesn't ever fly. The better thing to do is just say sorry and move on completely and hope people forget.

You have to understand several things. 1.) It was at a campaign rally. Anyone could be there and it is a speech meant to stir up the people there, some of whom are immigrants. 2.) If you are being attacked, go to a new strategy. This is a standard op for any campaign. And 3.) When in doubt, attack. This was clear in the GOP's strategy...they thought they had something and went with it.

In the district that this election occurred in, 58.5% of people voted Republican in 2004.

For this 2006 election, 49.3% voted Republican.

This is not a victory to celebrate for Republicans because it shows that they are losing ground.

I just heard her exact words on hardball.....She was speaking to a hispanic audience and she told the and I quote "You don't need papers to vote." Are you telling me you don't have a problem wit that statements?

Listen to the entire quote then. "You can all help--you don't need papers for voting, you don't need to be a registered voter to help." This comment was in response to a question by a man who asked in Spanish, "I want to help, but I don't have papers." I think I will repeat why she backed off of that statement.
