Okay, let’s talk about the disgusting facts in this case. The Democrats published a flier that offered to bring people to and from the polls on election day 2002. Several republicans got together and decided to intentionally jam the phone lines so that people could not get through and vote for the democrat running for the Senate. Well, it appears to have worked beautifully, and the republican candidate won 51% to 47%.
Three republicans have been convicted for “criminally violating federal communications law.” Today, James Tobin will be sentenced. I hope that unscrupulous jerk gets jail time.
Here are the more interesting facts in this case. The RNC has paid out $2.8 million in legal fees for defending these criminals. Gee, I wonder why they would pay out this much money for actions that are clearly illegal.
What’s even more interesting is that records show that 22 phone calls were made from Tobin to the White House 2 hours after the phone jamming stopped and until 2:17am the next day, which was 4 hours after the outcome of the election was announced. Let’s not forget that at the time of the 2002 elections, Ken Mehlmann (now, Chairman of the RNC) was the White House political director (he has denied any knowledge or involvement).
Prosecutors are seeking an 18 to 24 month prison sentence. Tobin’s lawyers say, “Mr. Tobin is a man with high ethical standards . . .” What? HIGH ETHICAL STANDARDS? You have got to be joking me. A man who jams the phones to prevent democrats from voting for their candidate has high ethical standards? His attorneys argue that he has suffered enough with humiliation from this whole thing. Sorry, but that man needs to reap what he sewed.
I wonder if Senator Sununu feels like he truly won that election?
Nice former Marine as well (McGee). Now he has some real ethics.

GOP Official Faces Sentence in Phone-Jamming
Democratic Lines Were Blocked in 2002 as New Hampshire Elected U.S. Senator

In October 2002, Charles McGee, executive director of the New Hampshire Republican Party, was mailed a Democratic flier that offered Election Day rides to the polls. The circular listed telephone numbers of party offices in five cities and towns.
"I paused and thought to myself, I might find out -- I might think of an idea of disrupting those operations," McGee later testified. A Marine Corps veteran, McGee approached the situation like a combat operation: "Eventually the idea coalesced into disrupting their phone lines . . . [it's] military common sense that if you can't communicate, you can't plan and organize."
