"Republican states spent years swooping in to bolster safe spaces for conservative voices at public universities in the name of fighting liberal censorship. The Israel-Gaza war is causing many of them to rethink free speech protections.

Abbott promoted his signature of Texas’ campus free speech law in 2019 amid Republican complaints that so-called cancel culture had seized higher education and grown hostile to conservative views. The law requires public institutions to ensure common outdoor areas on campus “are deemed traditional public forums,” set disciplinary policies for students and faculty who “unduly interfere” with other’ expression and created more protections for student organizations. It also reinforced schools’ authority to set reasonable restrictions on the time, place, and the manner of those activities. (Florida) has its own campus free speech law signed by former Republican then-Gov. Rick Scott, who is now in the Senate. Much like in Texas, a 2022 Indiana law prohibits state institutions from setting certain restrictions on expressive activity."

Okay, so they passed laws protecting conservative speech on campuses and now want to get rid of them because they don't like the Pro-Palestinian protesters' speech. Seems like there is a lesson to be learned form this that they are heartily ignoring as they are now rushing to pass laws preventing free speech on campuses. Anyone want to hazard a guess on what that lesson is?

Fake news. No one is being arrested at universities in Texas or Indiana because of their speech.

They are being arrested for "occupying" (a euphemism for trespassing, setting up tents and squatting, and blocking access to public property).

And perhaps for making threats against other students which is NOT protected speech.

And even those charges are being dropped in Texas.... More Abbott impotence....

Impotent? Are students still illegally squatting on UT campuses and harassing Jewish students?

At Columbia the authorities threatened to bring in the cops, but instead gave in to the protesters. Now all classes at the main campus are now held remotely. That's what impotence looks like.

I'm sure all the kids paying $80K per year at Columbia will feel they are getting their money's worth.

Jews are being threatened and the college's rules regarding behavior are being violated.

Free speech doesn't protect those.

Once you ban one kind of speech, you open the door to banning others.

Weren't there sit-ins in the 1960s by anti-Vietnam War and Civil Rights movement protesters? Were those covered by free speech or not?

They were arrested too

And were they wrong to protest in that manner? Seems like they were right ultimately. Seems like the people who wanted to crack down on protests were the wrong party in that debate, but none of them ever seem to get arrested for it, despite cops turning firehose and dogs on Civil rights protests and stuff like the Kent State massacre.

Fortunately we don't do dogs and firehouse anymore. But civil disobedience makes an impact precisely because the protesters are willing to suffer the consequences of their breaking the law. If that is removed then you're just an entitled whiner giving everyone else a bad day so you can virtue signal.

That's pretty easy to say when you never demand any sort of equal responsibility from the state on these matters. How many people suffered any consequences for the crackdowns against protesters in the 1960s?

Look at all the Jan 6 rioters who think they were being oppressed by the state and conservative elite politicians and media figures who say they are hostages and need to be pardoned. There is a pretty big double standard from conservatives when it comes to who is allowed to protest and have free speech.

To be clear, universities have the right to establish comportment on their campuses. They are within their rights to remove people who are not complying with their policy. The interesting thing here is they would be doing the pro-Palestinian protestors a favor by removing the anti-Semites among them, because that lot is getting all of the attention and discrediting the stated reasons for some of these protests. Telling Jewish students to go back to Poland does nothing but detract from the issue they're protesting. More importantly though, the universities are within their rights to enforce their stated policies on the behavior allowed on the campus; a part of which is to ensure students feel safe.

Keep in mind that freedom of assembly is also a right.

Nobody has banned free speech. Obstructing roads, threatening students and trying to prevent them from passing in order to get to class is not free speech.

Hypocrisy is the cornerstone of today's GOP. They don't care.

All gloves are off. All is fair. Cheat, lie, steal, whatever it takes.

Not your father's GOP.

Not on private property.

Obstructing roads, threatening students and trying to prevent them from passing in order to get to class is not free speech and is illegal.

It's False Equivalency Theater, Sunday Edition.

If you are saying the Columbia squatters should get the same treatment as the Jan 6 rioters, I would say you are being a little harsh.

OTOH, if on Jan 6, trump supporters had set up tents on the Capitol Lawn and refused to vacate for weeks on end, would you now be defending them?

Is it, how many people have died during these protests and how many people died due to the Jan 6 riot?

I am saying that a lot of conservatives who demand the state crackdown on these protesters demand the Jan 6 rioters be treated with kids gloves.

Not this conservative. Rioters should be prosecuted, regardless of their politics.

But this is not about J6. It's about the squatters at red state colleges.

May I assume you have nothing more to say about that? If so, thanks for the false equivalency and deflection. Have a great rest of your Sunday
