This badboy is eating my notebook alive.

Malaware found 132 infections - fixed and was told to restart

Malaware found 34 infections - fixed and was told to restart

Attempted System Retore - error mssg: System Restore has been turned off my group policy. To turn on system restore, contact your domain Administrator.

Semantic Anti-virus auto-protects keeps finding and quarantining IEXPLO~1.EXE (not found on scans, just auto protect).

Keep running Malaware, more tojans located

Running Spybot now, so far it's found:

PWS.LDpinchIE
Microsoft.windows: Disable System Restore (<~~~ surprise, not)
Microsoft.windows.security.center: registry tools
Microsoft.windows.explorer

and it's only about 1/20 done, still scanning

Was thinking of d/l this one too, but I cannot search for reviews:

If you can help, I would be most grateful. This one I won't ignore. Thank you

I had a very similar if not the same virus on my computer a year or so back where google was redirecting, and the virus was holding the door open for all of its friends to infect me as well. If it is the same, or closely related related virus (which it sounds like it is) it is extremely difficult to get rid of since it infects your rootkit, meaning that everytime you reboot it repropagates itself regardless of what you do.

I was on the verge of reformatting since I have a ghost image, but I was pigheaded and did not want to let the virus beat me, I eventually went here and asked for help and then they walked me thorough the entire process of eradicating this nasty bugger.

Register at their forums there and read the sticky topics of what reports they want you to provide, then start a thread and in time one of their experts will volunteer to walk you through your case from start to finish.

It is a tedious time consuming process, and you will be delving deep into the bowels of your computer system, but all is not lost.

Thank you Marduc. In the meantime, that's all spybot found, so I will "fix" those problems. I started to get the feeling that I best stop rebooting, so it's good to know that's sage advice.

edit: autoprotect found 12 more since I posted the OP. :doh

I have done work on quite a few troubled systems in my day, and this virus was by far the nastiest, most dug in sinister bug I have ever encountered, the guys at the link I provided know what they are doing and will provide you with the tools you need to clean it up though.

edit to reply to your edit: the rootkit infection is holding the door wide open and inviting all its buddies in. This sounds exactly like what I had encountered. Firefox ,Chrome, Win Explorer, Google, Bing, it did not matter which browser, or search engine, the redirects were unavoidable, and web searches were virtually impossible

Holy crap, Chuck. I hope you're able to eradicate this virus and still keep all your hair! Sounds like marduc gave some valuable advice. Good luck!

So now I've got the blue screen of death (I'm on another computer right now). {Fatal system error} This is beyond me.

Did you register at bleeping computers and post your info in a thread asking for help? It may be beyond you, but it won't be beyond them, and they will walk you through every step of the way in detail -when someone picks up your thread and starts helping you.

Yes, I did. But I knew it could be awhile before anyone responds. When I got the blue screen of death, I couldn't even get in in safe mode going back to the previous configuration. So I took it to a technician to stop the bleeding. He just called to ask me something and told me it's pretty badly infected. He had it up for a few minutes, and it crashed again. I posted over there to close my thread before someone puts time into it.

Thank you for your help. BTW in your avatar, I'm in the center. :tongue4:

What kind of jerk goes around making these sick viruses? :crazy3:

Thats what you get for surfing porn in the first place...;)

Sorry you are experiencing it. I have a few suggestions for what to do with the people that write viruses. Id start with duct taping them to a wall in a public square and allow anyone that has been inconvenienced by them to take a razor blade and commence the death of a thousand cuts. Im opposed to the death penalty...except in this case.

Y'know, avoiding viruses is not exactly a tough thing. If people did even the most BASIC computer safety, we'd see a dramatic drop in the amount of virus and malware activity.

Install MSE or Avast with Malware Bytes, ditch Norton, and use a damn firewall.

The problem with Virus like that is unless you know how to dig into the registry, and WHAT to look for, you're almost forced to reload Windows and wipe the HD.

I'd love to find the people that write these virus and beat them with old tuna.

Also, Change ALL YOUR PASSWORDS TO EVERYTHING. Call your bank and CC and let them know you've had a massive security breach and consider changing all your cards.

Better safe then sorry.

That was a rather rude thing to say. It's like saying "finding a job isn't exactly a tough thing. If people presented themselves even halfway decent at an interview, we could cut off unemployment benefits much sooner. Write a damn resume that doesn't suck."

I've somehow managed to avoid getting a virus for 12 years pf owning computers. I have a firewall, Malwarebytes, corporate AV ... etc. I got stung reading a freaking cancer site. What kind of jerk puts a virus in a place like that???

Virus protection is usually updated AFTER someone has written new code and others get hit. Sounds like you are one of the early victims. Sorry...best to just completely wipe the hard drive after you have recovered whatever you might be able to salvage.

I know a few execs at a certain well known anti-virus company used by the federal government...and they say that sometimes these guys that write viruses and hackers...their work is their resume. They get hired by the antivirus companies. Dont know if its true or not.

Totally different. Avoiding infection on the internet is a very small part luck and a VERY large part personal responsibility.

No, following all the aforementioned steps will not make you immune to viruses, but I'll tell you one thing, I've been doing freelance computer work for a while now and I have yet to see a computer infected beyond repair where someone had a responsible set-up and stayed away from sketchy sites and downloads.

99.99% of the time when someone starts whining to me about viruses, the answer to "What is your anti-virus software?" is usually "I actually need that?" or some derivation of that. I've had MANY people swear up and down that they just COULDN'T have a virus, they have Norton SystemWorks! Nevermind they never actually RUN it or UPDATE it.

Well no one was whining to you, so if you can't be a gentleman, then don't respond in my thread. And a cancer site is hardly a questionable site.

For anyone else who's interested, I lost everything on this computer. :boohoo: Everything. :( The bright side is that it's like having a brand new computer, so at least it's running fast.

The virus was working like the one Marduc had until an evil looking shield popped up, and then it was all gone. The technician who worked on it couldn't even get it back up for more than a few minutes without it crashing again. This was a particularly nasty virus.

Thank you for your suggestions. :)

Haha - I did that.
God my ass screwed anyway. Where there's a will there's a way - or - where there's a virus there's a way. No one's virus-proof.

I went with Kapersky instead, haven't had problems ever since (I figured out how the program works)

This is a public forum, open to anyone.

Hence why I said it's partially luck.

And how fortunate for you that I don't have a rotten mouth when someone makes a smart arsed remark when someone is having a rough time.

Wow, ok, you can go to hell. And yeah, I took that personally. When you've been looking for a job for eight months and you've only got another month's rent in the bank and you're trying to do something to buy you a little more time when some smart-ass comes along and decides to make massively unfounded assumptions, I take that personally.

You can be pretty damn ballsy when you're kicking someone else, but you take it personally and get upset when it gets thrown at you. No wonder you can't find a job.

/hoplite :nails

What exactly is your malfunction? I pointed out something completely reasonable and you're turning it into a massive deal about jobs that's completely unrelated to the OP and something I've never mentioned in this thread.
