Google employees debated whether to bury conservative media outlets in the company’s search function as a response to President Donald Trump’s election in 2016, internal Google communications obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation reveal. The Daily Caller and Breitbart were specifically singled out as outlets to potentially bury, the communications reveal.

Trump’s election in 2016 shocked many Google employees, who had been counting on Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton to win. “This was an election of false equivalencies, and Google, sadly, had a hand in it,” Google engineer Scott Byer wrote in a Nov. 9, 2016, post reviewed by TheDCNF.

Byer falsely labeled The Daily Caller and Breitbart as “opinion blogs” and urged his coworkers to reduce their visibility in search results.

“How many times did you see the Election now card with items from opinion blogs (Breitbart, Daily Caller) elevated next to legitimate news organizations? That’s something that can and should be fixed,” Byer wrote.

“Beyond that, let’s concentrate on teaching critical thinking. A little bit of that would go a long way. Let’s make sure that we reverse things in four years – demographics will be on our side.”

Some of Byer’s colleagues expressed concern that manipulating search results could backfire and suggested alternative measures.

While Robert Mueller blew millions on an investigation into political meddling from abroad, our own American tech behemoth Google discussed ways in which they could manipulate public opinion in upcoming elections. We also know that Google meddled with the 2016 Presidential Election itself, burying negative information about Hillary Clinton, and pushing anti Trump propaganda to the top of search results.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin was born in Russia, and the given name on his birth certificate is Серге́й Миха́йлович Брин

Brin represents the 'acceptable' Russian meddler in American politics however!

In the end, Google is a US company. A private entity, not a governmental one. No matter how much others may find it despicable they can alter their algorithms to whatever they please.

They're as intertwined with our government as possible.

"Fascism should rightly be called corporatism because it is the merger of state and corporate power," according to Benito Mussolini.

Google is the top tech company that receives government subsidies, picking up more than $630 million from states like Oregon, North Carolina and a few others.

For the same reason Facebook was given a pass on the Cambridge Analytica scandal - they own those charged with prosecuting criminal wrongdoing.

As long as they are truthful about it. Otherwise it's false advertising in my opinion... Should be in bold red letters on every search(This search is engineered for our political bias).

When did we reverse roles? Liberals used to be against big, greedy corporations and conservatives used to support them. (some cons still do, but you get what I'm saying)

Top three:

1. Lock them up!
2. Try them for treason!
3. Send them to Gitmo!! Rawr 'Merica!

Hidden behind the humor, I believe you really believe what you wrote. It's a common idea amongst some of the more radical elements on college campuses today, that free speech doesn't apply to their enemies, and that offending group think is worse than violence.

Aw looks like someone doesn't realize that people don't hate Clinton as much as they hate Trump, and that Trump stuff was and continues to be way more damaging and more and shocking than anything Hillary has ever done.

When did we reverse roles?

Probably when internet trolls who aren't really conservatives went offline for the first time in years. Was told by the X-Files and Fox News to find your own truth and not to trust American institutions. Claimed to be conservatives b/c they couldn't say racist things in public places without getting the crap kicked out of them and then proceeded to think that they are entitled to sex with every woman who wears heels and short skirts but get angry when those same women blab about their twisted and controlling behavior to the media. Something like that?

So why the heck isn't Google being investigated too?

I can see why users would have a problem this, and I would understand people going with a different search engine as a result. It is definitely an ethical issue, but I don’t see any legal lines crossed in what the OP cited. American individuals and American companies are free to try and sway people to vote one way or the other. Hell, they can even fund a particular politician’s campaign. I’m all for making the laws tighter on that, but until that happens...

But don’t you see a difference between that and a foreign government doing it? At least it is in companies like Google’s best interest for us to succeed as a country because they are at least in the same boat with us, though admittedly they are on the metaphorical upper decks in luxury cabins and most Americans are on the “lower decks”. But if the ship goes down we all suffer to varying extents.

Do you think Russia has America’s best interests at heart when they try to sway our public opinion. It is in THEIR best interest for our “ship” to sink.

"Sergey Mikhailovich Brin", just as it says in English.
It helps if you know how to read Cyrillic.

US companies (and wealthy individuals) manipulate public opinion in elections all the time. Google playing around with the order of search results is no better or worse than companies funding political ads through Super PACs.

And there is a huge difference between a US-based company manipulating public opinion during an election and foreign governments manipulating US elections.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin was born in Russia, and the given name on his birth certificate is Серге́й Миха́йлович Брин

Sergey Brin was born in Russia, but he immigrated to the US and became a US citizen in 1979 at the age of 6. He does not hold Russian Citizenship.

If Google censored right wing news, then they can use The Trump Defense:

They did not do anything illegal

Get you tiki torches! Let’s march!!

Don’t drive a car over protesters though. Don’t mail bombs to democrats. Just you know, make fun of the absurdity of the right wing. Viva la revolution!
We will have truth at any cost!!!

You are asking white middle class men who have never left the country to understand what immigration is. That's a hard ask.

I hear what you're saying a lot from people. The left loves to repeat it because they think they are using a talking point from the right against them. It's not true that Google can do whatever they want.

The truth is that when you agree to their TOS you and them are entering into a legally binding contract. I'm not claiming they are violating the contract but if they are they could be open to a class action lawsuit from all its users. Google is playing a dangerous game that some clever lawyer may come along and bankrupt them with.

They are agreeing to provide the users with a certain product in exchange for that users personal information. That means they have a responsibility to provide the product they promise. If their algorithm is in violation of their TOS it's not a free speech crime but it is a breach of contract. Its akin to Ford selling you a car they claim is equipped with something and you come to find out its not.
