Enamored of Arab money, arms sales and enlisting Arab states in their pro-Israeli and anti-Iranian agenda, the Trump administration's real play was never about the Palestinians or two states. It was always about the Arab nations. And authoritarian Arab regimes eager to please an autocrat-friendly president have been only too happy to follow along with Donald Trump.

What Pompeo and Kushner are up to (opinion) - CNN

The author seems to think that its acceptable to work with "authoritarian Arab regimes" (BTW-- are there any other kind?) when the objective is to pressure Israel over Palestine.
However, its a problem to work with "authoritarian Arab regimes" when the objective is to constrain Iran when the nuclear agreement expires.

Essentially, the authors defines the problem in the mid-east as that of the lack of a Palestinian state. But the evidence seems to suggest the problem is the rise of islamic fundamentalism-- ISIS and of course the old nemesis Iran.
