One of the greatest American movies was cancelled, "temporarily."

So this means, apparently, that almost any historical book or movie could also be cancelled.

Most earlier cultures did not adhere to current liberal/progressive standards. They never even heard of those standards. So do we really want to let the cancellers to erase history?

The western bible, old and new, is certainly guilty of defying your current standards. Should those books be banned or revised?

People everywhere have always hated enemies and strangers. History is full of hate -- should we cancel history?

Liberal/progressives today are as full of hatred as any other group that ever existed -- but of course their hatred is "justified."

If the movie comes back, it might be altered in some way to protect the viewers from reality.

What movie?

I'd hardly call one network that you have to pay for removing the movie and bringing it back as being cancelled considering you have always been free to watch it.

Keep up - the movie was added back to HBO awhile ago.

Gone with the Wind

likely taken off a streaming service for a period of time

Gone With The Wind isn't being cancelled. What's happening is that the capitalists who bought the rights to the film are adding in a disclaimer that the depictions of slaves in the movie are a white washing of the horrors that those who suffered through chattel slavery actually experienced. If that is too much for you, maybe it's you that needs a safe space from real history.

In the times of the ancient Pharaohs of Egypt they use to erase the historical records of the past with each new pharaohs anointment. This is at least in part why the engineering involved to build the great pyramids still remains a mystery to this day.
Its one thing to change cultural norms and its debatable if the changes are for the better or worse, however erasing the history of the past as if never existed is not a good idea.
Pretending like the KKK never existed and becomes forgotten might sound good at first. If in the future another similar movement tries to emerge its beneficial to have the historical record as a reference to use to argue against it. That is one of the fundamental flaws of banning things rather than putting them in context.

Yes well it's sheer idiocy to cancel the past. The past is reality.

I guess the main problem they have with this movie is that it does not show slavery as entirely horrible. Because it wasn't. White mothers trusted their infants and children with black mammies. Obviously, the black-white relationships then were often loving.

I am NOT saying slavery is ok! Obviously there were horrible masters as well as good ones. Just as today there are horrible bosses as well as good ones. The difference is that today in this country we are free to quit jobs, but slaves couldn't get away from horrible masters.

But there is nothing wrong with showing both good and bad aspects of the old southern culture.
