Aren't Golf courses usually watered and have little ponds scattered about and green? That would have to be one very dry golf course for a spark to ignite it. Of course its possible the enviro-religious nuts running rampant in Commiefornia imposed some sort of watering restrictions.
I'm guessing it must have been REALLY dry, and the grass caught rapidly...Ahh yes, try to tie this to environmentalists somehow. Nice. California's water restrictions aren't a product of environmentalism, they're a product of not having enough water. There's these things called droughts...
Anyway, I still call bull****. A tiny little smolder from a spark could just be stepped on.

Or more likely, the golfer didn't see the tiny smolder and was gone before it was noticeable.
Or perhaps, he saw it and watched it burn?
Dropped a cigarette?
They didn’t charge him with anything, though…
