l thought l can start it in the history forum but it may be removed to conspiracy if it is against the rules.

Through NATO, working with various Western European intelligence agencies, the CIA set up a network of stay behind “secret armies” which were responsible for dozens of terrorist atrocities across Western Europe over decades. This report will focus on the stay behind army in Italy, as it is the most documented. Its codename was Operation Gladio, the ‘Sword’.

In the early 1950s, the United States began training networks of “stay behind” volunteers in Western Europe, so that in the event of a Soviet invasion, they would “gather intelligence, open escape routes and form resistance movements.” The CIA financed and advised these groups, later working in tandem with western European military intelligence units under the coordination of a NATO committee. In 1990, Italian and Belgian investigators started researching the links between these “stay behind armies” and the occurrence of terrorism in Western Europe for a period of 20 years.[1]

‘Secret Armies’ or Terrorist Groups?

These “stay behind” armies colluded with, funded and often even directed terrorist organizations throughout Europe in what was termed a “strategy of tension” with the aim of preventing a rise of the left in Western European politics. NATO’s “secret armies” engaged in subversive and criminal activities in several countries. In Turkey in 1960, the stay behind army, working with the army, staged a coup d’état and killed Prime Minister Adnan Menderes; in Algeria in 1961, the French stay-behind army staged a coup with the CIA against the French government of Algiers, which ultimately failed; in 1967, the Greek stay-behind army staged a coup and imposed a military dictatorship; in 1971 in Turkey, after a military coup, the stay-behind army engaged in “domestic terror” and killed hundreds; in 1977 in Spain, the stay behind army carried out a massacre in Madrid; in 1980 in Turkey, the head of the stay behind army staged a coup and took power; in 1985 in Belgium, the stay behind attacked and shot shoppers randomly in supermarkets, killing 28; in Switzerland in 1990, the former head of the Swiss stay behind wrote the US Defense Department he would reveal “the whole truth,” and was found the next day stabbed to death with his own bayonet; and in 1995, England revealed that the MI6 and SAS helped set up stay behind armies across Western Europe.[2]

Gladio is not a conspiracy.

Um..we also help overthrow the democratically elected presidents of Guatemala (54) and Iran (53), rigged an election in Greece in 48- what's your point???

None of these "massacres" are proven to have been committed by any such group. This is very much conspiracy theory.

What massacres?

maybe you live in another world like many americans

He's not an American LOL; and there is no concrete evidence that the CIA was involved in Gladio. There is only expectation and speculation.

The topic is America bashing. Again, rocks and glass houses.

On May 13th, 1981, Turkish revolutionary Mehmet Ali Agca attempted the assassination of Pope John Paul II in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City. After seriously injuring the Pope and wounding multiple bystanders with multiple bullits, Agca was apprehended and sentenced to life in prison, but in 2000, he was pardoned at the Pope’s request, but he remained imprisoned following an extradition to Turkey. Many theories have flown around about why Agca attempted to kill Pope John Paul, and many of them focus on the idea that the KGB killed the Pope due to the Vatican’s involvement in NATO’s Gladio and funding of Solidarity in Poland. However, as we are about to see, this is far from the truth.

The Susurluk Scandal was the fallout from a discovery made at a car crash on November 3rd, 1996. This accident claimed the lives of three people: former Deputy Chief of Istanbul Police Hüseyin Kocadağ, a man by the name of Abdullah Çatlı, and his girlfriend, Gonca Us. Catl was a convicted fugitive, hunted for his role in various murders and drug smuggling, while Gonca Us was a hit-woman for the Turkish Mafia. Catl, who was also the leader of the Turkish ultranationalist group known as the “Grey Wolves”, had in his possession in the car:

The scandal revealed what is known as the Turkish “Deep State”, which is a complex network of terrorist groups, government officials, and Western intelligence agencies.

A key part of the “Deep State” was Counter-Guerrilla, which was the Turkish branch of the NATO/CIA Operation Gladio.

The above is the command structure of Counter-Guerrilla (stinet.dtic.mil... ).

In the 1960s, Counter-Guerrilla developed the National Movement Party, which formed the core of the future groups of the various ultra-nationalist militant organizations. Throughout the 1970s, Counter-Guerrilla engaged in horrific acts:

In 1977, Counter-Guerrilla was involved in the Takism Square Massacre, which on May 1st of the that year, snipers opened fire on a trade union rally. 38 people were killed in the hail of bullets. One person present at this massacre was CIA “asset” and ex-Mossad agent Hiram Abas. The building from which the shots were fired belonged to the ITT Corporation, which was connected to the CIA and funded the 1973 coup against Salvador Allende in Chile.

The CIA also used Counter-Guerrilla member Ruzi Nazar, who was a former Nazi, to train the “Grey Wolves”, which was the youth wing of the Nationalist Movement Party. According to Daniele Gaser, the founder of the Grey Wolves, Alparslan Türkeş, was a high ranking official in Counter-Guerrilla.

n 2006, Agca wrote Pope Benedict XVI the following letter:

Pope Ratzinger listen to someone who knows these things very well.
Your life is in danger. You absolutely must not come to Turkey. Pope Benedict you must know that between 1980 and 2000 I was in contact with various Western intelligence services and with the Vatican.
In those twenty years, I learnt many things and I came into possession of many classified secrets.
For your own welfare, you must make a grand gesture of honour and resign.
Then you must return to your native land (Germany) and in your place an Italian cardinal can be elected Pope, possibly Tettamanzi or Bertone.
Then the Vatican should become a centre of peace and fraternity. The world has a need of this, it does not need hatred and vendetta.

And this is a perfect reason why this belongs in conspiracy theory, not history.

I never understood the reason for people believing nonsense like this. Generally they take 1 or 2 real things, and then wrap and interwrap increasingly complex theories and conjecture until the picture they present is not only unworkable, but utterly unrealistic. In other words, conspiracy theory.

Yes, the "Operation" was real. It was mostly just a plan for operations, much like Operation Werwolf was for the Germans at the end of WWII. A contingency plan. And of course since these individuals would be working "behind enemy lines", the best way to ensure communications with them would be through the intelligence services. This is how such groups operated in WWII as well.

I mean, just think about that for a few moments. For some strange reason, the Italian Secret Service and the CIA both set up a Turkish citizen to kill the Pope, arranging to have it blamed on the KGB, for what purpose exactly? In what way would these organizations benefit with a Turk with Bulgarian ties assassinating the Pope?

You might as well try to say that the President of Iran arranged to have the Ayatollah assassinated by a Dutchman working for the intelligence services of Syria. Because that is about as logical as this nonsense is.

It makes no sense, and when you look at all of the supposed "activities" like this, they all evaporate into nothing.

Sorry, I really expected something better then this insane mess.
