Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich proposed the creation of a new version of the controversial House Un-American Activities Committee to root out American citizens who plan to commit terrorist attacks in the U.S.“We originally created the House Un-American Activities Committee to go after Nazis. We passed several laws in 1938 and 1939 to go after Nazis and we made it illegal to help the Nazis. We're going to presently have to go take the similar steps here,” Gingrich said in a Monday appearance on “Fox and Friends.”
Originally founded in 1938, the committee investigated suspected threats of Nazi subversion and anti-government propaganda. During the Cold War, its activities sprawled, leading to the blacklist of Hollywood stars and left-wing activists, writers, and academics accused of having Communist ties.
In 1959, former President Harry Truman infamously called the committee “the most un-American thing in the country today.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich proposed the creation of a new version of the controversial House Un-American Activities Committee to root out American citizens who plan to commit terrorist attacks in the U.S.

“We're going to say, if you pledge allegiance to ISIS, you are a traitor and you have lost your citizenship,” Gingrich said.
Under current law, the U.S. cannot revoke the citizenship of natural-born U.S. citizens against their will.

Oh for ****s sake. Newt wants to go back in time and reinstate one of the most un-American policies? Sounds like Newt is trying to jump back in for a position for a VP nomination for Trump.

1. Gingrich is a bit crazy, and this is overall a dumb idea.

2. However, if you join ISIL, you should absolutely lose citizenship. You want to be a citizen of a terror state? Okedoke. No public benefits for you.

3. Yes. He's probably trying to make up for his temporary moment of sanity when he said that attacking a Judge for being Mexican was bad.

Trump is bringing the 40's and 50's back huh? Pledging alliance to ISIS would in the first Trump term I am sure, change to just being a Muslim. I really cant believe Trump has turned into such a storng political movement, I have way over estimated how far we had come.

*state in name only*. No actual state recognizes ISIS as a state.

 statehood is not determined by the opinions of others, but is inherent. ISIL meets the requirements of statehood, regardless of whether or not we wish to recognize them as legitimate (I don't think we should).

However, that's immaterial. They define as a State, they issue passports, citizenship papers, etc. If someone wants to join that - let them. And let them lose their US Citizenship when they do.

Fear and anger - that's what's motivating people on both sides this time around, not just Trump's folks. And... it's very concerning to me. Frightening actually. Our Constitution and everything we represent to the future is at risk from both parties.

A bit crazy?

You're being kind.

Gingrich has about 12 major ideas a week.

Once a month, one of them is really good.

The rest of the time, he needs to be kept in a closet, so everything he says can be screened before being allowed in public.

further proof Santayana was correct

The problem is, how does one define actual joining ISIS? One can simply say, "Im with ISIS", does that make them actual part of ISIS? Inspired by ISIS? A member of ISIS?

i believe the current standard is to dial 911 and tell them

It is not unamerican to protect the country from internal destablization.

That broad generalized excuse can be used for almost any un-democratic, authoritarian reasoning.

It can also be used to protect society at large from threats. government structure ever proposed is immune from abuse, that doesn't mean the underlying idea is bad. hell if that's your standard Washington State Dept of Social and Health Services shouldn't exist.

HUAC did much great work, as a result of congressional investigation we discovered scores or nazis and later soviet agents working amongst our government feeding information abroad. if you're a member of a foreign country's government or if you are a member of a group or ideology sypathetic to an enemy government or NGO you should not be working within our country.

This is why Franklin Roosevelt, our second greatest president of all times began and encouraged committees like HUAC.
It was after the late thirties when the Dies committee was established.

Good point - precision is important. Attempting to travel to land governed by ISIS (whether in Northern Libya or Iraq/Syria) to formally fall under that organization as a political entity. Simply pledging Bayah here and then walking into a Starbucks while chucking grenades wouldn't do it (my complete lack of sympathy for such a person says "strip his citizenship and then hook his nuts up to a car battery", but my appreciation for the importance of rule of law and precedence-setting points out the dangers of such a path).

I thought that we already had a sort of HUAC that went after right wingers, conservatives, Christians, "the vast right wing conspiracy", NRA supporters, Tea Party, and others. It is somewhat unorganized but effective when done by government employees. Obama also has his HUAC type war against "suspects" who he sends drone out to assassinate.
I am strongly opposed to that as well as Gingrich's idea. Stop the tribalism of hate. My family was victimized by the earlier version.

During the Cold War Communist terrorism in the United States was not a problem. Communist espionage was a minor problem.

The House Un-American Activities Committee spent most of its time suppressing the expression of left wing and socialist opinion, and discrediting the New Deal. Until the Tet Offensive caused people to question the basic assumptions behind the Cold War, it was dangerous in the United States to criticize capitalism, advocate socialism, or say anything good about any Communist government.

Communist Party members and Communist sympathizers had every right under the Constitution to propagate their opinions as teachers, journalists, and contributors to the popular culture.

If there actually had been Communist Party members and Communist sympathizers working for the State Department, and influencing American foreign policy it is reasonable to suppose that the United States would have avoided the War in Vietnam, and the Iranian Revolution of 1979.

True.

So I guess the question really is what how to protect the from internal destabilization, isn't it?
Or is it 'more American' to not do anything and allow the killing, maiming of the innocent and internal destabilization to continue?

The House of Un-American Activities was a witch hunt that lead to many individuals who were exercising their 1st amendment rights to be publicly shamed.

:doh Great work? Are you ****ing kidding me? Wild claims of communists everywhere. The only "spy" that was uprooted from HUAC testimony was Alger Hiss, and its still not even known if Hiss was actually a Soviet spy. The rest were calling people Communists and claiming everyone was a member of a lawful political party. Some were true, that they were members of the CPUSA, but its a legal political party and one is allowed to be a member of that. To call HUAC's work "great" is pathetic and a spat on our history driven by fear.

What are you talking about? HUAC constantly attacked FDR and tried to undermine his policies...

After-all look at what Eleanor has said about HUAC: "I have never liked the idea of an Un-American Activities Committee. I have always thought that a strong democracy should stand by its fundamental beliefs and that a citizen of the United States should be considered innocent until he is proved guilty... What is going on in the Un-American Activities Committee worries me primarily because little people have become frightened and we find ourselves living in the atmosphere of a police state, where people close doors before they state what they think or look over their shoulders apprehensively before they express an opinion... The Un-American Activities Committee seems to me to be better for a police state than for the USA." Hollywood and HUAC by Eleanor Roosevelt

Agreed.

These insane GOP proposals seem to lack reality and credibility! How does one determine a Muslim? Will a simple question at customs do?

Why not just "ban terrorists"?

The guys are so full of ****! :lamo

Hiss was a spy. And there were a good number people in American society at the time, including the intelligentsia who were, in fact, Soviet agents.

But overall HUAC didn't do a good job spy catching.
