Gilette Anti-Male Ad

Good, positive commercial.
 
I suppose the question is, why do some associate masculinity with bullying, sexual harassment, and demeaning women to such a degree that when an ad says a man can do better than that they're triggered?

I don't mind this commercial, I think it's encouraging our maturity. It's not anti male because there are men encouraging other men not to do stupid ****.

I saw men solving their own problems, pulling themselves up. How is that anti-male?

And really crass of you to say that most boys are not raised by their fathers. Millions of devoted dads would disagree, even feel insulted by that.

Besides, were any of the bits showing men misbehaving false?

The message is that there's no logic in repeating a thing as if it's true or good just because it's a common saying.
 

If that's your take away, then to each his own.
 
And to think the people incensed about this are generally the people who regularly claim that it's "the left" that overreacts all the time.


It's a commercial. If you're somehow threatened by it, you might want to meditate on what you mean by manliness in the first place.

It's not anti-male, it's supposed to be about confronting "toxic masculinity", a recently invented rhetorical box where everything negative about male dominance can be neatly stored. I agree with you that there are some toxic feminine habits that could also be confronted but are unlikely to make a commercial. That being said, men are doing most of the killing and raping on this planet. We could use a bit of introspection.

This video, however, and much of the conversation I hear from those who advocate from a perspective of victimhood, risks straddling the line between genuine advocacy and that advocacy becoming a sort of bigotry of its own. And, when corporations -entities whose primary mission is profits- start scolding us for being imperfect humans, it sounds a bit insulting.

Let's not forget that who we are is the product of evolution and we rarely succeed in effectively confronting our animal nature. Just like the religious and political figures who have been publicly embarrassed when they were discovered to lead secret sexual lives, the average human man or woman can only pretend not to be attracted to someone to a degree. We can only suppress our dislike of some people to a point. We are not, by default, kind. Our drives were evolved to give us the best chance of survival, not to follow a book of etiquette. As such, we are aggressive and self-serving in many ways and that means there are often victims. That reality used to be assumed but today we're trying to get past that and it's difficult.

Change is too slow, I admit it. I wonder, though, if the answer is for corporate sanctimony and an indignation that too often smells like generalized hatred itself. There are certainly monsters out there but it's not the average man. The average man is imperfect but trying to be better. I'm not sure the message of the video appreciates that.
 
Maybe if their female razors cost as much as the male ones, I would believe this ad. Instead the price is always higher. I have more than one female friend who uses the Mach 3 razor for leg shaving because they're cheaper and last longer.

What I found distasteful about the ad is that they are using the #metoo movement to up their PR game to turn a profit. Everything in America now is politicized, even buying shaving razors it seems.

What next, children's cereal?

It doesn't matter if you're for or against the ad. As long as you're talking about it, Gilette's winning.
