Big Ben (L) and the Mecca Clock Tower (R) are now in competition to be recognised as the centre of time

But now the supremacy of Greenwich Mean Time is being challenged by a gargantuan new clock being built in Mecca, by which the world’s 1.5 billion Muslims could soon be setting their watches.

151 ft. clock face diameter and you still can't tell what time it is from the ground. Binoculars?

According to Yusuf al-Qaradawi, an Egyptian cleric known around the Muslim world for his popular television show "Sharia and Life", Mecca has a greater claim to being the prime meridian because it is "in perfect alignment with the magnetic north."

This claim that the holy city is a "zero magnetism zone" has won support from some Arab scientists like Abdel-Baset al-Sayyed of the Egyptian National Research Centre who says that there is no magnetic force in Mecca.

"That's why if someone travels to Mecca or lives there, he lives longer, is healthier and is less affected by the earth's gravity," he said. "You get charged with energy."

Cool looking clock. I like the design.

Why not, time begins somewhere.

Let the Muslims observe this if they want, but it would be ridiculous to even consider changing world time to placate the Saudi's.

Exactly........ the rest of the world operates on real time and they will always be 3 hours early to any event.

What’s next? Are they going to want to change the international language of air traffic control to Arabic? :lamo

This will go over about as well as the metric system in the US.

I don't think anyone but a few Islamic nations will actually go along with this. The world runs on GMT, all time zones are based off of this. If they want to cling to false scientific claims and become an annoyance to world time then let them.

The Stonecutters took care of that and the Stonecutters will take care of this.

They are just going "hey, were important! Pay attention to us!"

A well placed air burst should take care of this stupid clock.

They built a big clock and copied Big Ben lol, but I don't see anywhere where officially they are asking to change GMT to Arabia time. I think the title and article is a little misleading.

They could just do what China does, which is ignore the time standards set by the world and set the centre at Beijing time. China spans about 4 time zones, but everywhere is on Beijing time regardless of where you are. It's pretty retarded when you're in western China, it's 4pm in Beijing, but actually 1 in the afternoon where you are.

Saudi Arabia could just start teaching their kids that their clock is at the centre of time. It doesn't really matter anyway. The whole "middle time" thing is just cultural superiority non-sense, whether it's Big Ben or Mecca. The time differences will still have to apply based on earth rotation.
