I'm sure you have history books in Europe. Crack one open and read of Hitler, how Hitler would have withdrawn his occupation of the Rhineland should the allies have had the guts to mobilize, how his operation against Austria was a circus of German military incompetence yet Europeans quickly acquiesced, and of Hilters worthless promises that was the basis of the sell-out of Czechoslovakia, and convinced Hitler that the allies would never stand against him.
Then, as now, there was a huge peace lobby, one that was determined to prevent the re-arming of the UK and France because it was "a threat to peace" - indeed, some of them were also fellow travelers of fascism in their own countries. And, as should have been expected, the allies were under-prepared and easy pickings for Herr Hitler.
Georgia and the Ukraine have been Putin's version of Austria and Czechoslovakia - in Georgia he discovers that he must revamp and expand his forces, in Ukraine he finds the allies willing to have hope false promises, but also finds they are unwilling to stop his annexation of Russian's own Sudetenlands. And now, with his massive new missile deployments the Europeans cower in fear, waiting for the next hammer to fall, unable to get up on their hindlegs and defend themselves.
