The black sheep of German politics has a candidate for President. Problem is Max Otte is not a member of Germany's Alternative for Germany AfD. He is a member of the Christian Democratic Union CDU. And for that Max is being suspended with immediate effect by the CDU. Max appears not to see what the whole uproar is all about. He considers the nomination and an honour and will rather not quit the CDU.
The AfD appears to be a fascinating German phenomenon. It is hard to fit in the American spectrum. Not being German I can barely wrap my head around what the AfD is. Roughly it will approximate to something like the Klan in the US. That be kind of like a Democrat accepting the Klan's nomination as its candidate for a highly ceremonial office which does not exist in the US: a ceremonial President. But Democrats were the incubator for the Klan, and for decades after wore two hats: Democrats by day, the white cone Klan headgear by night.
In Germany it appears there is a consensus that no can break bread with the AfD. Which is where the difference lies. In the US Democrats can, and did break bread with the Klan. As a matter of fact the Klan suckled at the teats of the Democratic Party in its infancy.
It is hard to run into fireworks in German politics. They dont appear to call each other names. It is mostly a motley of rather severe, austere business suit gentlemen. So the AfD makes for a lighter side of German politics.
What are Max Otte's chances?
Unlike the mainstream of his party, Otte has not shied away from association with the AfD
Germany's center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) on Tuesday said it was suspending parliamentarian Max Otte after the far-right populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) said it would nominate Otte to become the country's next president.
The CDU made the decision at a party leadership meeting on Tuesday evening.
Outgoing CDU General Secretary Paul Ziemiak said after the meeting that Otte's AfD candidacy would "seriously damage" the conservative party and required "immediate intervention."
Earlier Tuesday, Otte attended a press event with AfD co-chair Alice Weidel and her party co-chair Tino Chrupalla in the parliamentary Reichstag building in Berlin.
Weidel had called him an "honorable politician" and a "man of the center." Otte made it clear that he planned to accept the nomination and that he did not intend to voluntarily give up his CDU membership as the party had demanded."
