Do you care to share it?

(Perhaps we're just having a communication issue?)

Well, it is simply this:
No country should insist that all other countries use only the "home name" for it - in other words: the endonym.

Why would you says Germany in Standard German? Germany is not a word, it is "Deutschland", it even says so in their country name and the anthem.

ooopps - that was a typo!

Of course I meant to write: "When I am speaking in Standard German, I say Deutschland!"

In this section I have read again and again that everybody MUST call Belarus by the name Belarus, because the people there say so!

Now I wonder how many of those super-clever posters also maintain that Germany MUST be called Deutschland, because the people there say so.

When I was young my name for Germany was The Enemy.

When I am speaking in English, I say Germany.
When I am speaking in French, I say Allemagne.
When I am speaking in Standard German, I say Germany.
And when I am speaking in my own language, I say "Ditschlond".

Sorry, there is a typo there - and it is too late to correct it there.

Of course it should read like this:

When I am speaking in English, I say Germany.
When I am speaking in French, I say Allemagne.
When I am speaking in Standard German, I say Deutschland.
And when I am speaking in my own language, I say "Ditschlond".

Nevermind, I was wondering about the "standard German" comment ;)

And here is Germany in Russian: Германия
And here it is in Belorusian: Германія

So would have I !

Well in the past the Dutch were not so nice about Germans, a lot of people called the Moffen and Germany Mofrica or Moffenland. A lot of them still spoke of Prusen from the German Preusen/Prussia.

At time one could see signs at sporting matches against Germany or in Germany "my grandmother wants her bike back".

Well, we are used to that!

The Austrians call us "Piefkes" and the Swiss call us "Swabians" and sometimes "Sau-Schwaben" (pig Swabians) - forgetting that in the Middle Ages all the German-speaking Swiss were 100 per cent Swabians themselves - as part of the "Herzogtum Schwaben = Duchy of Swabia". :)

As an answer there was this German song: "Ohne Holland fahr'n wir zur WM = Its is without the Netherlands that we take part in the World Cup!"

And again my question:

In the Belarus-Thread many members said, that if Belarus calls itself Belarus, the whole world must call it Belarus.
That what be "the only decent thing to do".

Now how do these same people call Germany? Or Italy and Spain and Norway etc etc etc?

ドイツ

Doitsu

And here is "Germany" in the Japanese language. :)

When I was young my name for Germany was The Enemy.

And. now many generations later, Germany is once again Britain's enemy. Doing everything in its power to harm the UK for having the temerity to break free from that manifestation of German imperialism misleadingly called the 'European Union'.

If I were prone to see the OP as representative of his people, I'd call it the land from which inane and totally superfluous polls and threads originate.

Since I'm not, I won't.

This question has not been answered yet.

2 out of 6 voters say "Duitsland" so far.

We Dutch always remember very fondly when we won in 1988 the EC in Germany by beating Germany in the semi finals before winning against the Soviet Union.

We ought to have become world champions in 1978 but I am not sure we were allowed to win then in Argentina under the Junta back then. That is one thing I hope Fifa and the EUFA have learned, never play a final tournament in dictatorial or unfree nations. I seriously disapprove of the Middle East WC. Not going to be real happy that we are playing in stadiums built with the blood and lives of semi-slaves.

So do I!

It would be a good topic for a poll as well!

When speaking English I use Germany, French Allmagne, German Deutschland.
Never talked about it in any other language

And when I speak Swiss German I say: Düüütschland! :)

2 out of 12 now say: Duitsland

The bigger insult is if you call us people from the Grand Duchy of Baden thus: Schwaben. :devilish:
