German minister warns Nato against 'warmongering'

It bears repeating ... Steinmeier is an embarrassment and he won't hesitate to throw his neighbors under the bus.

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier

How is speaking against rising tensions and militarization on both sides in an effort to avoid another European war "throwing his neighbors under the bus"? Sounds to me like he's looking out for the welfare of his neighbors. We should be strengthening relations with Russia, not provoking them into conflict.

My gosh, who'd a thunk it? Another propaganda piece by the resident propaganda mouthpiece. Didn't we already throw many EU Nations under the bus by demanding sanctions against Russia for not approving the Coup d'etat by the US in Ukraine? The sanctions have cost the EU dearly.

On ‎8–9 July 2016, the heads of state and heads of government of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization states will hold the 2016 NATO Summit in Warsaw, Poland.

Roughly two weeks away. Steinmeier knows this. Rather than address his issues at the proper venue, he circumvents Warsaw and instead postures in the press.

What Steinmeier wants is a resumption of full trade ties with Moscow and to hell with the security concerns of his fellow NATO states. He's a pud.

So what do you want, an all out offensive code name Barbarossa II?

Not really. For those that follow such things Steinmeier is a well known cubbard Putini and is trying his onetime patron's boots on for size. Schröder was a loose cannon too that Putin rewarded princely, when he left office.

That is basic group negotiating skills stuff. If you disrupt resolve or signal to the counterparty that unity has broken down, you strengthen the counterparty's position.

That is what happened in the pre invasion negotiations with Saddam.

This is essentially, what the speaker for military affairs for the cdu Röttgen and Steinmeier's spd's coalition partner in government said. The FM is playing domestic election populism and weakening the NATO position as well as aggravating the Eastern European EU members.

I'm not a fan of the EU. I think the original objectives have been lost or bastardized, and now it is the Banker's hand that rules the EU. Bankers are not about helping the people. They help the rich get richer. The rumor that the riches will trickle down is an outright lie. It trickles up. A one way flow.

We are to believe that NATO troops near the Russian border are a threat to Russia, but Russian troops near the borders of several NATO nations are not a threat? The Russian track record in this regard forces the issue. I'm old enough to remember Hungary and a few other Russian actions that don't inspire confidence in their peaceful intentions.

IMO, Steinmeier is wrong. NATO needs to stand united against the Russian threat.

However, he's advancing German interests: For Germany, the sanctions are costy and military confrontation is a risk to Germany's security -- problem is, even if the geo-strategic situation suggests that an alliance with Russia is best for stability east of Germany (like it was 1871-90s, as Bismarck well knew... and Hitler knew in 1939, too), it does not take Germany's allies in the east nto account -- the interests of Poland and the Baltics i.e.

Germany should better avoid the impression in these countries, that Germany once again finds an agreement with Russia above their head -- and against their interests.

Deescalation may have made sense in the 1970s towards the East Bloc, a police Steinmeier's SPD is proud of, but it's not a good idea in the current situation.

IMO.

So what do you want, an all out offensive code name Barbarossa II?

NATO executed a successful containment policy for 44 years that culminated in the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Maybe this time somebody will remember to bring winter gear

(That was a joke, btw)

By showing weakness and division he makes Europe less safe, not more. The ironic result will be to cause Germany's smaller neighbors to the east to grow closer to the US.

The idiocy of it all is that the German army is considerably involved in the manoeuvres. In fact Merkel has made noises not so long ago of contributing more German troops to a prolonged station in Lithuania.

Steinmeier is positioning himself for next year's election and, most unwisely, putting his position of probable leading candidate of the Social Democrats above his current (far more official) position of foreign minister.

That's the trouble with coalition governments, when elections loom everybody forgets they're still part of that same government and goes maverick.

Profile neurosis at its current height.

Vile pandering is exactly what Steinmeier is doing ... excoriating NATO in the hope that doing so will draw more votes to the struggling SPD in the 2017 German election.

Steinmeier has also failed to weaken EU resolve regarding Russian sanctions at this time. Merkel prevailed. But Steinmeier will certainly engage in acting as Putin's front-man in this regard probably beginning in December. Putin desperately wants the sanctions removed but is unwilling to honor his obligations. Moscow has not fulfilled even one of its obligations under the Minsk II Accord.

EU to extend sanctions against Russia

Tuesday 21 June 2006

The European Union’s top diplomats have agreed to extend sanctions against Russia by six months to keep pressure on Moscow over the conflict in eastern Ukraine. Ambassadors from the 28 member states agreed unanimously on Tuesday to prolong the sanctions until 31 January 2017.

Though, it appears in German interest to avoid confrontation, it would very probably not work. Being dependent on an autocrat that is brutal and imperialistic, as the EU found Putin to be in the Ukrainiane is a fool's choice. History is full of Chamberlains and Churchills cleaning up after them.

Meanwhile the EU has agreed on prolonging the sanctions til January next year.

Steinmeier Says Europe Threatened By 'New Divides,' Urges Dialogue With Russia

No Foreign Minister in Europe or NATO is fostering a "new divide" quite like Steinmeier is fostering a new divide from within.

Putin only listens to dialogue when it originates from a position of strength. Steinmeier's Putinista antics are ... anathema to developing cohesion and a position of strength.

It seems that Steinmeier's statements were ripped out of the context, when they were printed in BILD am Sonntag, a tabloid newspaper known for its shrill and exaggerated headlines.

That paper didn't print the statements Steinmeier made before he said that line. He also said:

"With the annexation of Crimea and the activities in Eastern Ukraine, Russia has caused a feeling of threat in our eastern neighbors." "A united reaction by NATO is right." "Nobody can consider the planned scope of NATO measures as a threat for Russia."

Only then, he said the line that was quoted here.

There won't be any wars.......at least anytime soon.

The US population is war weary and drained emotionally after losing 4-6 thousand young people in a place that we should not have gone to to begin with.

Russia's military machine isn't even close to being ready for a war on 3 fronts.

The war that began with the 1993 attack on the WTC will probably run for 50 years.
