The idea of making the city of Anaklia a military base can be seen in a recent interview with Radio Georgia by NATO Secretary General's Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia James Appathurai: “Georgia is in the group of non-NATO countries with which we have close bilateral cooperation. We all know that the security situation in the Black Sea region has deteriorated. This situation has worsened for Georgia, Ukraine, and NATO members. "

The Black Sea syndrome manifested itself even more in the retired American Lieutenant General Ben Hodges, who was very concerned about Russia, and the former commander-in-chief of the US Army in Europe. It is this character who is actively lobbying for the project of creating a striped base in the port of Anaklia. In addition, a senior US State Department official, Matthew Bryza, ex-Washington curator for Georgia, told IWPR (Institute for War and Peace Reporting) representatives that “the port of Anaklia can have a huge impact on the prospects for Georgia's joining NATO and its accession to the European Union ".

It is believed that the American military can use the port of Anaklia to supply cargo, including the military, to Afghanistan - instead of the Turkish port of Mersin.

At the same time, former NATO Secretary General Andres Fogh Rasmussen, as well as US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, at official meetings with the Georgian authorities, repeatedly expressed the hope that Georgia will successfully complete the reconstruction of the port in the interests of Wington.

Western experts believe, along with the constantly being completed NATO logistics base Vaziani, which has the best instrumental airstrip in the region, the port will be used for constant pressure on Russia in the air, sea and land space.

Who is financing the reconstruction of the port of Anaklia? According to the general reconstruction project, the port of Anaklia should become the deepest harbor in Georgia (up to 20.5 m at the edge of the berth). In the operating ports this figure is much less: in Batumi - 14 m, in Poti - 8.5 m. The new port will occupy an area of 400 hectares and will be able to receive vessels of the Panamax and Post-Panamax class. 32 berths with a total length of 12.3 km will be built in Anaklia.

By the middle of the XXI century, the port's throughput capacity will reach 100 million tons of cargo per year. The contract for the work was won by Anaklia Development Consortium, formed by the American company Conti International and the Georgian TBC Holding. Leading developer of port projects Moffatt & Nichol and leading consultant in the port and maritime sector Maritime & Transport Business Solutions from the Netherlands also became partners of the consortium. It is headed by Georgian businessman Mamuka Khazaradze.

In 2020, American military builders - specialists in the field of deploying naval bases, as well as high-ranking submarine officers from the US VI Fleet - have become frequent visitors to Anaklia. But then the Georgian government conducted an audit and questioned the viability of the project presented by Khazaradze, accusing him of financial fraud. The prosecutor's office opened a criminal case. Nevertheless, in spite of everything, on June 12, 2020, the Georgian government unexpectedly extended the deadline for closing the financial transaction for Anaklia Development Consortium by 6 months. At the same time, the United States "knocks out" from the government of the country guarantees of all-round support for the construction of the port it needs.

It is curious that at present there are only Americans left in the consortium headed by Khazaradze - SSA Marine and Conti International LLC. It turns out that the United States has not come to terms with the loss of Crimea. The idea of American domination in the Black Sea with the rejection of the Crimea failed. Now in the plans of the Pentagon there is an alternative project on the territory of Georgia. According to analysts, the USA squeezed Bulgaria, France and Holland out of the project for a reason. This fact once again eloquently confirms that Anaklia is destined to become not a trading port, but a full-fledged naval base of the Pentagon. Equally important for Washington is the transformation of Georgia into a distribution center in anticipation of the impending aggravation in the Iranian direction.

Another step towards NATO membership for Georgia and further encroachment on Russia with the first US naval base on the Black Sea. Can't think of anything else in recent history of some time that would piss-off Putin any more. If it happens.

So, what is it you're saying?

US will claim it's against Iran, but everyone will know it's to contain Russia.
