Georgia’s repulsive new election law is Exhibit A in the GOP’s war on voting rights

Georgia police arresting State Rep. Park Cannon for protesting the state's new JIm Crow voting laws.

3/26/21
The tableau of Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signing a new elections law said it all: six White legislators flanking the Republican governor, his pen poised above a gleaming wood table. Behind them, a painting of the white-columned Callaway Plantation. Not shown: the enslaved people who once picked cotton and raised livestock on the 3,000-acre plantation. Not shown, either: Black state legislator Park Cannon, arrested by White state troopers after she knocked repeatedly to gain entrance to the bill-signing. Among other things, the new law makes it a crime — yes, a crime — to provide water or food to people waiting in line to vote. Welcome to 2021, where Republicans have embarked on a national effort to suppress the vote at all costs. And, not to avoid the obvious, to suppress Black votes, because those ballots would not be cast to Republican advantage. “Un-American,” President Biden called it at his news conference Thursday, and he was right. “It’s sick. It’s sick.” It’s also a product of GOP desperation to retain or regain power. Alice O’Lenick, chairwoman of the Gwinnett County election board, didn’t mince words about the need to tighten up voting rules in Georgia. After the “terrible elections cycle” in 2020, when Republicans lost both Georgia Senate seats and Biden won the state’s electoral votes, “I’m like a dog with a bone,” she told fellow Republicans in January.

This isn’t about the phantom menace of voter fraud. It’s about making it as hard as possible for voters who aren’t inclined in Republicans’ favor to have their ballots cast or counted. You can debate whether the impact on voters of color is an intended feature or a problematic bug, but it’s an undeniable reality. The new Georgia law stands as Exhibit A in the 2021 campaign to curtail voting rights but will not be the year’s last. Most astonishingly, the new law criminalizes giving food or drink to those waiting in line to vote, on the apparent theory that this could somehow corruptly influence voters. Here’s an idea: Make it a crime to force people to wait in long lines to exercise their right to vote. Perhaps these restrictions, and their discriminatory impact, could be justified if there were a need to impose them. There isn’t. Not a clear one, not any one at all, except for the baseless frenzy over stolen elections and widespread fraud whipped up by Donald Trump and his allies. As Georgia’s Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger — now the named defendant in the lawsuit — said in January, the state conducted “safe, secure, honest elections” during the 2020 cycle. This small-minded new law is a dangerous cure in search of a nonexistent problem — unless the problem is that the more people get to cast their votes, the more Republicans lose.

This is just despicable, in your face racism by the Georgia Republican Party.

They're going back to 1950 even if they have to destroy democracy to do so.

The well-photographed signing of this bill in Georgia in front of that painting of a slave plantation wasn't just happenstance. It was an intentional 'wink' to powerful white supremacists. He was sending a message to them; 'hey, I got you, no worries'. Brian Kemp is up for reelection next year and he barely won against Stacey Abrams in 2018. In the lead up to that election, Georgia put 53,000 voter registrations on hold, the majority of them Black voters, "for additional screening". Stacey Abrams lost by almost 55,000 votes. It will be very different in 2022 and Brian Kemp knows this. Abrams' campaign to register Georgia voters was very successful.

In the time since that election in 2018, Stacey Abrams coalition has registered 500,000 new voters, and guess what -- they sure as hell aren't all republican voters. The republican held legislators in Georgia know what that means for 2022 and that's exactly why they're moving the goal posts now.

"As Maine goes, so goes the nation" was once a maxim in United States politics. There are 250 bills in the works nationwide in republican controlled legislation states that will change elections in those states. These 250 bills are specifically intended to keep republicans in power in both state and federal elections because it gives them the power to do so, and it will all be legal when those bills pass.

The maxim may soon be changed to "As Georgia goes, so goes the nation"

This is why Trump is still dangerous!

Not to the average American. Not to the Democratic Party.

Trump is a threat to the viability and strength of the Republican Party. Led by Trump, they are becoming more ludicrous by the day. Now Republicans have outlawed providing water to people waiting in line to vote in Georgia.

How absurd can you get.

It only gets worse.

CNN reports, "The same week that a major backer of Trump's false election fraud narrative admitted it was unreasonable, Republican lawmakers in Georgia turned legislation inspired by the false narrative into law."

Lawyer Sidney Powell, who pushed the most virulent and false claims of fraud in 2020, faces a massive defamation lawsuit by the election infrastructure company Dominion Voting Systems, which were active in Georgia in 2020.

Powell repeatedly pressed the voter fraud myth as fact on the airwaves and in court after the election, but facing Dominion's lawsuit, she said in a filing that "reasonable" people would not accept her statements as "fact."

Also, in response to the network's many lies about voter fraud, Dominion sued Fox News this week, asking for $1.6 billion in damages.

Because he lost the election in Georgia, because Georgians refuted his leadership and elected two Democratic Senators giving the Democrats control of the Senate, Trump is seeking vengeance against those who voted against him and his party.

The Republican Party is being led by a man seeking retribution, not what is best for the party or -- heaven forbid -- best for the country. Allow me to repeat:

Republican lawmakers in Georgia turned legislation inspired by the false narrative into law."

Americans are looking at all of this, and that does not bode well for the Republican Party. Like lemmings, they are being led over a very deep cliff.

Meanwhile, in the real world, Georgia election reform:

1. Increases the opportunities for all Georgians to vote as it increases the time for early voting.

2. Places political accountability in the electoral process. So the electorate can now hold people responsible for mis-management that results in five hour lines at the polls.

3. Replaces subjective standards of voter eligibility questions with an objective one, thus increasing fairness and transparency to all.

4. Clarified rules against politicking at the polls.

That was quite the performance from the squad member. Someone give her an Emmy Award!!
Loved the flourish when she lifted her feet so the LEOs had to drag her ass out.
She is QUITE the method actor!!!!
Take a bow, resistance, racist lady!

The lines are being drawn. White folks are getting tired of this. They are about to "take their country back".

Trump Tells Iowans 'We're Going to Take Our Country Back'

Someone tell me, what are Republicans afraid of?

There will be no answer. Republicans on this forum do not discuss what Republicans are doing. They are only concerned about what Democrats are doing.

Which explains why they are losers. They have to be pretty bad to lose the House, Senate, and Presidency all within a span of four years. The way they are going their dogcatcher candidate will lose.

It stands to reason you would focus on the black, female lawmaker than the dragonian voting restrictions passed by the Georgian Republican legislature and signed by the Republican governor.

Well, what the Democrats are doing is indeed concerning. But you are right-- Republicans also need to produce their agenda and message.

BTW- Mr. Obama turned a filibuster proof Senate and a majority in the House into a full GOP majority in Senate and House. People thought the Dems were dead then.
These things are cyclical.

What restrictions? No Tamminy Hall electioneering? boohoo.
Say, why don't Democrats stop closing down polling stations? That would go a long way to mitigating lines.
How about they ensure everyone can get a photo I.D.!! Not hard. Ya can get on in GA for free.
FREE!!
Oh, are you too busy worshipping on Sundays to vote? Because the Republicans opened up Sundays for voting.

You're damn straight I'm focusing on the black woman acting like a lunatic. What should I focus on? Making elections free from fraud?

I'm already doing that.

Along with GA's Republicans.

The OP focused on the black, female lawmaker.

Election fraud.
Yup, election fraud. They can scream "racism" and "Jim Crow" (how unaware are they?) all they want, but GA expanded EARLY VOTING and secures the vote with an I.D. requirement.
You can get an I.D. for FREE in GA, so they can stuff the "muh poll tax" retorts.

Give us a break. Republicans have been clear about the intent of such laws. They were stunned by the turnout and the election of two democrats to the Senate, a black man and a female -- in the land of Tara. GOP control of the state is Gone With the Wind, at least for a time.

Nothing new here. Check out or read about the documentary, "All In: the Fight for Democracy," for an historical perspective.

Please tell me after perusing, what section you have a problem with....and why

it is a LOT to read....i admit

Election fraud.
The old snipe hunt. We investigated after 2016, when insecure Donnie couldn't accept that he lost the popular vote. Remember three million illegal votes and no one noticed, the special commission disbanding? Same song, different beat, same bullshit artist in 2020. Old myths die hard. Three recounts in Georgia mean nothing to true believers.

That's an easy question to answer, but I'm not a republican. The simple answer is that the Republicans fear that they may never win another election. The power hungry party of Trump are not willing to organize a cohesive party by melding with conservative republicans like Justin Amash, Adam Kisnzinger or Susan Collins. No, the power hungry republicans like Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, Kevin McCarthy and Mitch McConnell don't want to win elections on policies and bills that help the American people. They want bills that hurt blacks, help the wealthy, and give them more power.

If they had to run on policy, what is it then? What is in their 'manifesto', what's their aim, their ideologies? They can't promote it because their aim is to gain power at all cost, repress Black votes, pass restrictive bills for health care recipients, strip welfare programs down to nothing and screw bills, policies, democratic rights or even try to encourage people to use their right to vote. They would definitely lose, hands down if they were open about their real agenda. The only way to win is to cheat by passing bills that deny people's rights.

These 250 bills are specifically intended to keep republicans in power in both state and federal elections because it gives them the power to do so, and it will all be legal when those bills pass.

The republican party has gone full-on, no holds barred, authoritarian state.

What election fraud?

This is in Michigan, but the same thing happened in other places...including Georgia.

(Okay...here we go..."Gateway Pundit...biased!!!"..."Nuh-Uh!!!"..."X number of court cases!!"...did I miss any nonsense objections that refuse to address the actual evidence?)

I thought any attempt to interfere in the democratic process is sedition and an attempt at insurrection.
And you wonder why she was arrested?

This bill will absolutely disenfranchise legal voters. However the little pieces of bread they've provided in this bill as far as extended Saturday hours or whatever is dramatically overshadowed by what will make the greatest impact on future Georgia races. Essentially, people in Georgia shouldn't even bother to get out to vote and wait 4 to 10 hours in the sun in a long line waiting to vote. They shouldn't bother and that's the signal the republican legislators are sending. You see, it doesn't matter who wins the most votes in the next Georgia election. It could be a massive landslide for Stacey Abrams to win the Governorship. It could be hundreds of thousands more than Brian Kemp gets. But, it doesn't matter, Brian Kemp will win.

This bill will legally allow the Governor and those other elector guys who were there and witnessed the signing of 202 behind a locked door, to freely and at their own discretion, appoint a republican of their choosing, to be chairman of the state board of elections. This bill will come in very handy and especially important if a democrat appears to be winning an election. Their 'boy', the special chairman of the state board of elections, will simply change the results by tossing out votes, many thousands of votes, just invalidate thousands of votes in order to allow their republican guy to win.

That part of the bill is the real game changer, not the fact that they have made it a misdemeanor to pass out water to folks standing in 90 degree heat for hours, but that particular part of the bill is the game-changer. There's 250 bills like this in the works nationwide in republican controlled legislation states that will forever change elections in those states. These 250 bills are specifically intended to keep republicans in power in both state and federal elections because it gives them the power to do so, and it will all be legal when those bills pass.

Why are people waiting hours to vote?
Jeez, figure it out.
