resident Donald Trump has announced Gen. Jim Mattis will retire as the Department of Defense secretary at the end of February.

"General Jim Mattis will be retiring, with distinction, at the end of February, after having served my Administration as Secretary of Defense for the past two years," Trump said in a Thursday tweet. "During Jim’s tenure, tremendous progress has been made, especially with respect to the purchase of new fighting....
"....equipment. General Mattis was a great help to me in getting allies and other countries to pay their share of military obligations. A new Secretary of Defense will be named shortly. I greatly thank Jim for his service!"

CNN reported Mattis’ resignation letter said he is stepping down so Trump can have a defense secretary better aligned with his views.

Mattis basically resigned because he disagrees with Trump. Trump doesn't listen to anyone but himself. LOL

He resigned in protest...here is his resignation letter ..

Scathing.....absolutely scathing....a complete rejection of Trump foreign and military policy.

Trump is really playing with fire now. His base is not big enough to rescue him here.

How long can this collapsing administration continue? Who will want to work for Trump now?

Just offer him full immunity if he is willing to quit.

His base will just label Mattis a liberal or part of "the establishment."

The only person who needs to resign is Donald J. Trump. His administration is a complete disaster.

Have you noticed that Trump is such a control freak that he announces other people's departures?

Clearly Mattis is no longer the best people, and Trump only hires the best people.

Mattis is one of the Deep State operatives thwarting this pure and angelic administration.

We need to be told what Mattis did to lose the trust of his commander.

So far I have not been able to find this info.

Does anyone know the answer?

I cannot read this without a certain amount of emotion; this will be a holiday season for the history books...

Mattis was not evasive in his retirement letter. He did not leave much of anything to the imagination. Clearly the last straws were leaving Syria entirely, threatening to leave Afghanistan entirely, putting US troops on our Southern Border to put up barbed wire. But the rest is in the Mattis letter.

Trump chose to pull the troops out of Syria without consulting anyone. Even the Pentagon didn't know. He's a joke. There's a proper and responsible way to do things.

It's Mattis who lost trust in Trump. He's tired of the craziness and we only know a fraction of the craziness.

I think it's quite obvious. If you can't tell well, just analyze the **** show of the day.

A text:

I believe allies should be treated with respect and malign actors treated as such. You deserve a defense secretary whose views on those subjects are “better aligned with yours.”

In other words, stop attacking our allies and defending our enemies.

It's amazing the base does not understand this. I tried explaining it to my boss that he is anti-american by not siding with the intelligence community. He was just "DEEP STATE SUCKS! BLAH!!!!!!!!!!"

Soldiers dont decide national policy, they follow the lawful orders of their civilian commanders.

Mattis seems to have a problem with how we run this country.

**** him.

Want to guess how long it will take for Putin to cross the border into the Ukraine with actual Russian troops and tanks instead of "insurgents"?
