The most interesting Republican you've never heard of - 2012 Elections - Salon.com

Gary Johnson, a former governor of New Mexico and a likely candidate for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, is talking about hookers.

"It's never been a consideration that I would enlist the services of a prostitute, myself personally," he says. "But if I were to do that, where would I want to enlist that service? Well, it would probably be in Nevada, where it's legal, because it would be safe."

When's the last time Mitt Romney engaged in a hypothetical like that? But Johnson doesn't even blink. It's not like this is the only topic on which he risks offending the GOP's base. He also favors legalizing pot, supports abortion rights, and opposes the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Oh, and he doesn't go to church. "I don't think you'll ever hear me invoking God in anything I do," he tells me.

I'd vote for him.

He's the younger, fitter Ron Paul. And has the same chances of winning (nil).

Sorry Catz, but when Salon.com is pushing a "Republican" it's pretty obvious what's what. He's a Republican that has little in common on a wide range of issues with the base voters of his party nationally.

Sounds like a winning formula to me! Well.. for Obama perhaps.

Yes, that's what I said. YOU SO got me.

Let's see:
It's not like this is the only topic on which he risks offending the GOP's base.
So right in the article it's clear he's got no problem offending the very base he'd need to court for 2012 run. Not looking good! However, I fail to see reference to Communism here... Perhaps a little more digging will help you?

He also favors legalizing pot,
Ohh, man most GOP Voters aren't too keen on making Reefer legal. Well, it's ONE issue right?

supports abortion rights,

Ouch, a pro-baby killer! That's sure to resonate with the base. Still not seeing Communist anywhere. Deeper!!!

and opposes the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Well, that's a 50-50 there. My dad is a pretty hard right guy and was against Iraq more so then Afghan. Still, one could make the argument that properly presented as to the reason he could at least NOT offend the base. A Toss up.

Oh, and he doesn't go to church. "I don't think you'll ever hear me invoking God in anything I do," he tells me.
And this appeals to a voting base that attends church how?

Where was the secret commie message I was supposed to see?

Oh wait, that was you just blathering cause you had no refute for my post? Well, thanks for admitting such!

My mistake I keep forgetting your a statist, and people like Johnson attempt to advance Liberty not constrict it unlike you and the religious zealouts.

I sure hope only one of either Johnson or Paul runs. Both of them running hurts both of their chances. Ron Paul is a bit old, but he's also more well-known now so he would probably stand a better chance. Still Johnson has executive experience so that makes it a plus. Maybe the media will treat him like a more serious candidate compared to their collective campaign against Ron Paul.

Yeah, that's it, I'M a Statist. Advancing liberty by having no stand on issues that effect society, and he has ZERO chance in hell of getting nominated by a party capable of propelling him to the WH and making "changes" you want.

So go ahead, sit back, rail against the system... and watch out, is that a Siren I hear in the background?

Well, there was a religious zealot on the GOP ticket for the last election, and look at how well that ended up.

You wouldn't know a "Religious Zealot" if they bit you on your ass.

The GOP Failed because of McCAIN.

He definitely looks like a good choice if Ron Paul doesn't run.

So you're telling me that the reason why the majority of Americans voted for a "fascist socialist nazi Islamist" is because McCain just wasn't Christian enough?

Here's what I think happened: McCain wasn't religious enough for it's base and Palin was too religious for GOP moderates and for independents.

So maybe voting for a guy who's from the GOP and who isn't a hard-liner on any issue may actually help their chances in getting a Republican elected into office.

Then again, it won't be the kind of Republican they want, so more likely than not the base will cut off their nose to spite their own face.

Wherein did I imply such? No where. Obama offered the false hope of a man with leadership, charisma and a plan. McCain was off message, uninspiring and couldn't rally his base to his side.
However, if you wish to keep constructing commentary claiming I implied other things, by all mean I won't stop you. Mostly because the rest of the posters around here can see you for what you are more clearly.

Here's what I think happened: McCain wasn't religious enough for it's base and Palin was too religious for GOP moderates and for independents.

:failpail:
The election didn't hinge on McCain or Palin's religiousness.

So maybe voting for a guy who's from the GOP and who isn't a hard-liner on any issue may actually help their chances in getting a Republican elected into office.
Only with making "Private Lean" *snicker *snicker, people like you think the GOP is finally moving in the proper direction... left.
Then again, it won't be the kind of Republican they want, so more likely than not the base will cut off their nose to spite their own face.
Yes, I'm sure we Conservative GOP type voters will want to change our beliefs to accommodate someone like you...
