Gallup: Conservatives outnumber liberals, but gap is closing

Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Americans still lean conservative over liberal, but liberals have made gains, as a majority of Democrats identify as liberal for the first time, a Gallup Poll said Tuesday.

Thirty-five percent of Americans have described their political ideology as conservative for the past two years, the poll said, compared to 26 percent as liberal. Another 35 percent describe themselves as moderate.

Liberals and Conservatives...

When there are only 3 choices, Liberal/Moderate/Conservative and completely un-nuanced (progressive, socialist, libertarian, etc.) as shown in the actual poll it isn't really saying much.

https://news.gallup.com/poll/245813...ive,%20but%20Liberals%20Keep%20Recent%20Gains

Once upon a time, considering myself a Classical Liberal I would perforce have opted for "Liberal" as my choice. But if as today it meant being lumped in with Progressives and Socialists? I'd opt for Moderate or Conservative.

What a stupid thing to say and even more idiotic to believe. Democrats are in the pockets of the rich just as much as republicans.

The last two years has shown me that most people don't know what the **** conservatism is.

Even among the people who say they are conservative.

First and biggest legislation passed by Republicans? Tax cuts for the wealthy/corporations.

Reality speaks louder than your false equivalency.

EPA gutted by Pruitt.
Conservative judges who side with business.
I could go on.

Sounds like your mad republicans took a different directions from always trying to say the budget and reduce spending. They flipped the script and said screw it, lets the next democrat president deal with it.

Nate Silver pointed something interesting out:

Among adults <50 years old, (slightly) more Americans identify as liberal than conservative, which is pretty new and different. It's often been the case that voters <30 identify as liberal, but the age 30-49 cohort also now IDs as liberal instead of "maturing" into conservatism.

??

I'm talking conservatism, not to be automatically equated with republicans.

Democrats have once again become the party of rich white people who say they'll take care of minorities.

Red:
One must mind that the finding adds taxonomic nuance to respondents' endogenous limning of their political affiliation. Information of that nature abets political strategists/consultants; however, it leapfrogs laymen's comprehension of "liberal," "moderate" and "conservative." Accordingly and among preponderantly procrustean "punditry" such as one most typically delivered on DP, the headline constitutes little other than sensationalism. In less highly polarized times, the finding might merit mention here, but in this moment, it's a unit of mostly meaningless minutia.

And the biggest voting block, Independents, leans Democrat.

https://news.gallup.com/poll/15370/party-affiliation.aspx

That varies back and forth, dependent mostly upon current events at the time the question is asked - as your link shows - and the variance is nearly split down the middle at any given moment, especially when the margin of error is taken into account.

Neither of the major parties hold too much sway over the Independents, who tend to be voters that look at issues more than ideology.

True, the split varies, at times near even (considering the possible margin of error) however, it is noteworthy that over the last 2 years, and more so during the last year, there have been many more months where Independents have leaned Democrat by margins well in excess of any possible margin of error than during the 4 preceding years.

Maybe they’re considering issues and ideology.
