France's Senate has voted to ban beauty pageants for children under 16, in an effort to protect children — especially girls — from being sexualized too early.

Anyone who enters a child into such a contest would face up to two years in prison and 30,000 euros in fines, according to the measure. A pageant organizer expressed regret that the move was so severe.

Such beauty pageants, involving girls of all ages heavily made up and dressed up, regularly elicit public debate in France and elsewhere. While such pageants are not as common in France as in the United States, girls get the message early on here that they are sexual beings, from social messages and advertising and marketing campaigns — and even from department stores that sell lingerie for girls as young as 6.

"The foundations of equal rights are threatened by the hyper-sexualization that touches children ... between 6 and 12 years old," said conservative lawmaker Chantal Jouanno, who authored the amendment.

She noted it's primarily focused on protecting girls. "When I asked an organizer why there were no mini-boy contests, I heard him respond that boys would not lower themselves like that.".....snip~

Now this is interesting. Hard to believe that the French can see some of the light and where exploitation of Women begins. What do you think.....should the US adopt the same law. Stop beauty contests for Girls under the age of 16? Charge Parents that want to use their kids to live off of? What about Baby Contests? Does it start there for the little girls? Myself I don't think it is a bad idea. Moreover it encourages girls to not look for an easy way out. Thoughts upon the matter.

It's weird and creepy to want to dress your five year old up like a 30 year old hooker in my opinion. I think it's a great idea to put some restrictions, such as age limits, on those pageants.

It's probably one of the most disturbing aspects of Western culture, and I won't shed a tear over this being passed.

Is that kid the Princess of the Spiders?

Heya AW.

Yeah but it is an industry in the US. IF our Pols tried to do something like this immediately they would cite all the jobs and money that will be lost over such. I guess it is the same for most things with using kids. 9 times out of ten the parents are the ones that don't have anything else going and then its push the kids into what can make them money. Course I am not saying that is for all of them out there. As I am sure there are parents who have concerns even when getting their kids into these type of Public displays. That are successful.

I would say with the US we have a tendency to fall off into accepting the likes of Movie Stars and Celebs. Sports Icon and Divas.....wherein we see the Kids going off into the same thing as their parents. We accept them outright that they do. As if it should be expected. Which that's despite many of them not really having the ability or same ability as their parents. For example.....Accomplished Actress being the Mother. But the daughter is nothing but a comic.

This is a good thing.

No more toddlers and tiaras and teenage beauty pageants.

Since when is it the province of government to regulate or better yet make pageants illegal?

Since when is it the province of government to regulate or better yet make pageants illegal?

Since it's in the national interest for their citizens not have their brains messed with by idiotic things.

Since when is it the responsibility of government to legislate what people think? :tongue4:

Since MTV and crapplywood came along and messed people up with their parasitic entertainment.
Get rid of them and their ilk, and you can have a better society overnight.

is an Independent really just a socialist in disguise?

Because socialists are known for their hate of MTV and HOLYWOOD (which supports Obama and liberals in general).

No. I'm an independent with an adversity to stupidity and I recognize MTV and such to be the greatest dispensers of stupidity in the world. And hence, the creation and entertainment of programs like most beauty pageants, toddlers and tiaras, sweet 16 and all that crap fall into the same thing.

And yes, I know beauty pageants have started before MTV was created, but if you look at beauty pageants from 80 years ago and from those now... you'd find a pretty big difference.

you are making absolutely no sense whatsoever
go right on with that

Heya AOG. :2wave: Okay.....say it is the people of a state and their communities. With others states that have the same mentality. At least they can attempt to prevent it Nationally.

Do you think it is bad idea or not. Despite government stepping in? What other way could the exploitation of children be stopped with regards to this industry?

a government mandated society? Yes that would be SO much better hah

You are already living in a government mandated society. What do you think laws are? There is no such thing in nature or human society as unlimited freedom. there are always boundaries.

The French decided to put up another, very correct boundary.

And if you have something to say, do use more than a few words and quote me so I know if you responded. Or else, I shall ignore you on the basis that you have nothing meaningful to add to the conversation.

Are they making the pageants Illegal? Or are they just Stating that there has to be an age requirement to be in one?

Heya RM :2wave: I for one can say I am glad I didn't have any daughters. (course in the regard of mans nature  ) Although My ex did. I never could go for little girls running around with make up and lipstick on and thinking it was appropriate for them to go out looking like that. Playing dress up and all that around the house and with her friends was one thing. But to try and talk about going out and hanging out. It wasn't happening in my world. Despite her not being my kid.

Course we divorced before when her daughter was 13.....no sooner had things ended. She was out running around with the makeup on. Hair Extensions and the whole bit.

I tried to tell a couple of times before thing went chaotic with her mother. But Then again.....I wasn't her Real Father.

It's probably one of the most disturbing aspects of Western culture, and I won't shed a tear over this being passed.
I have been saying for years that this is the proof of deep American cultural schizophrenia...on the one hand pedophilia has been elevated to the worst possible crime one can commit, and on the other the proliferation of beauty pageants that obviously physically objectify little girls (and boys in some) to an absurd degree.

Little girls like to play dress up and be pretty, I have no desire to scrub that from our culture, I think it's fine so long as the parents know how to channel that desire properly, into a focus on poise and manners and stately grace, rather than absurd showboating and doing anything at all to get noticed.

My commitment: if/when I have a daughter, if she wants to participate in such pageants, I will let her. No makeup, no swimwear. Ever.

Where do we draw the line? Child acting? Child Singers? There's lots of exploitation of children by their parents for these as well, including sexualization at young ages.

I deliberately avoided that example because it's easily refuted..."that was ONE crazy mom, you can't judge all pageants by that!" The problem I have with pageants started long before that outrageous example. The damage they do is much more subtle and insidious.

Nah.....it just beats Jack and Jill going up the hill with a buck and a quarter. Then Jill coming down with 2.50. :2razz:
