Seems France can't make up their mind.....one minute they want to Punish Assad and then the next they are stressing the Importance of a Political Solution. Which is it? Moreover they want to make the Opposition.....Stronger. What do you think about that? Note the change in terminology by the Western media now.....they prefer to use the term Opposition rather than Rebels. Now I wonder why that is.

France said openly Thursday for the first time that its military is preparing for a possible operation in Syria — but President Francois Hollande stopped short of announcing armed intervention over a suspected chemical weapons attack.

Hollande does not need French parliamentary approval to launch military action that lasts less than four months. He appears to have a stronger hand than his U.S. and British counterparts, who are facing some resistance at home to a Syrian intervention amid questions over the attack.

On Thursday, French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said: "The Armed Forces have been put in position to respond" if the president commits French forces to an international intervention in Syria.

Hollande on Thursday stressed the importance of a political solution and making the Syrian opposition a stronger alternative, notably with increased firepower.

French military officials confirmed that the frigate Chevalier Paul, which specializes in anti-missile and air-air capabilities, as well as the hulking transport ship Dixmude, had set off Thursday from the Mediterranean port of Toulon as part of normal training and operational preparations — but denied reports that the move was linked to a Syrian intervention.....snip~

France says ready to punish Syria despite British no vote.....

France said on Friday it still backed action to punish Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government for an apparent poison gas attack on civilians, despite a British parliamentary vote against it.

An aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin, a close Assad ally, seized on the British no vote as evidence that "people are beginning to understand" the dangers of military action.

U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said his country would keep seeking an international coalition to act together on Syria, where hundreds of people were killed in last week's reported chemical attacks. Syria denies using chemical weapons.

"It is the goal of President (Barack) Obama and our government ... whatever decision is taken, that it be an international collaboration and effort," he said.

Asked if France could take action without Britain, Hollande replied: "Yes. Each country is sovereign to participate or not in an operation. That is valid for Britain as it is for France."

My guess is that the term "opposition" is the French analogue of Obama's "overseas contingency operations" or "workplace violence."

Gosh, it seems like we're all ready to go, we just need a leader. But like the headline says, "The British Aren't Coming!, The British Aren't Coming!"

France says Syria strike possible by Wednesday.....

French President Francois Hollande said a military strike on Syria could come by Wednesday and that Britain's surprise rejection of armed intervention would not affect his government's stand.

"France wants firm and proportionate action against the Damascus regime," he said in an interview to Le Monde daily on Friday. The French parliament is due to meet on Wednesday for an emergency Syria session.

The French leader, who had vowed to "punish" President Bashar al-Assad's regime for an alleged chemical weapons attack on August 21, said "there was a body of indicators pointing to the responsibility of the Damascus regime."

"The chemical massacre of Damascus cannot remain unpunished," he said, adding: "I will today have a meaningful exchange with (US President) Barack Obama.".....snip~

This is not a chance in tone. The French have been strongly advocating for a major ramp up in assistance to the FSA and SNC for almost two years. Their commitment to military involvement once the US signaled support was immediate.

Heya Sherman. :2wave: Truthfully the French filed the resolution with Syria while the Libyan conflict was taking place. Moreover they officially recognized the FSA and TNC before we did . Then the UK did....and we still had not at that time.

Yes which is why this is not a shift in position.

Well, you don't see me saying the French have shifted their stance anywhere. They have been filing all kinds of Actionable Action Resolutions in the UN. At least with 5 different countries that we know of.

This time the British are the cheese-eating surrender monkeys!

Imo French are too happy that British are not there and now they will lick the US as their "best friend in bad times" :lamo

Well, I think the French are ecstatic that they got the US to cover their ass again. Since they couldn't go and Bomb Syria on their Own. If Obama would have said no we aren't going. The French would have panicked immediately knowing they would be the only ones to take Assad on.

See the French talk a good game.....they want to Punish somebody.

Well now we want to punish France for supporting terrorists. Maybe we turn around and tell them we are going to punish them for that.

France seeks UN action on Syria after Russia move.....

France announced Tuesday it will put forward a resolution in the U.N. Security Council aimed at forcing Syria to ultimately dismantle its chemical weapons program, seizing on a diplomatic opening from Syrian ally Russia amid Western threats of force against President Bashar Assad's regime.

France, a permanent member of the 15-nation council, will start the resolution process on Tuesday under Chapter 7 of the U.N. Charter, which is militarily enforceable, Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told reporters at a quickly arranged news conference.

The proposal would also condemn a chemical weapons attack near Damascus on Aug. 21 that Western powers allege was carried out by Assad's regime — a claim he has denied.

Earlier, on French radio Europe-1, Fabius trumpeted Western pressure for leading to a "turnaround" in Russia's position.

Fabius also warned that finding and destroying "more than 1,000 tons of chemical weapons" would be very difficult and would require international verification amid Syria's civil war. He reiterated France's position that Assad must leave power: "We can't imagine that someone who was responsible for 110,000 dead, it is said, can stay in power forever.".....snip~

France seeks UN action on Syria after Russia move

Ah.....ya just got to luv the French. Always filing some resolution in the UN. When is the World going to wake up and tell the French to STFU and sit their asses down. Quit talking tuff. Its not like the French can handle anything on their own. They are just as incompetent as are the Sunni Arabs. Truly enough is enough.

Eventually the French are going to try and jump off into our own backyard. Just like they do with everyone else. So we might as well as wake up to the Fact. They will try and create more problems on the Global Stage. So we need some tuff Foreign Policy people.....that wont just put up with the French running their mouths and thinking they can dictate things to the World.

Man up France.....send in your people to Syria. So we can watch how inadequate you truly are. This time, let us watch your people Die in Vain! See how you like it, for a change!

Hollande doesn't rule out Syria 'military option'.....

PARIS (AP) — French President Francois Hollande hasn't ruled out the "military option" against Syria, as U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry flies to Paris for talks Monday on how to rid Syria of its chemical weapons stockpile.

In a televised address Sunday night, Hollande said: "The military option must remain; otherwise there will be no pressure."

France, which has been at the forefront of international diplomacy on Syria, firmly backs the rebels and has strategic and historic interests in the region. It urged military action after a chemical attack on Aug. 21 that Paris and Washington blame on Bashar Assad's government.

But Hollande said there needs to be sanctions to coerce the Syrian regime into sticking to turning over its chemical weapons.

"It is necessary to include the threat of sanctions if the agreement and the aims of the Security Council resolution aren't carried out," he said.

"The next step, it has to be finding a political solution to the Syrian crisis," he added.....snip~

Well.....The French are doing some more talking. Wonder how they will be able to back up their words?

looks like the MS media wants to help France stay relevant in the World of Today. For some reason France still see itself as a Major Military Power. Do you think they are being Optimistic. Or have they fallen for the Hope yet cannot see the Change?

Why is France pushing so hard on Syria?
Associated Press – 18 hrs ago

In a secretive compound north of Paris, colored blips and blotches on a computer-screen map of Damascus depict an armored vehicle at a highway, tanks, a blown-up building in a suburban field. An unusual glimpse at France's military intelligence headquarters demonstrates how closely the French are watching what's happening in Syria — and how involved the French government is in ending Syria's civil war.

As French President Francois Hollande keeps up the threat of military strikes against Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime, he isn't just acting as President Barack Obama's poodle, as some critics maintain. France, Syria's onetime colonial ruler and a country eager to maintain its place as a military and diplomatic power, has plenty of reasons to be out front on Syria.

The Middle Eastern country took its current shape as a French mandate after being chiseled out of the Ottoman Empire after World War I, as did neighboring Lebanon, and French is spoken by many in both countries. France has particularly close ties to Lebanon and wants to prevent it from being sucked further into Syria's chaos.

The ties to the region also make Syria a particularly attractive place for homegrown French extremists. French Interior Minister Manuel Valls said this month that about 110 citizens or residents of France have joined up with jihadist fighters in Syria — about half the total number from European Union countries. French authorities fear they will return home to carry out terrorism.....snip~

Why is France pushing so hard on Syria?

I would love to see France to lead a military attack on anyone. Not because I think they're right on an issue, I think they're dead wrong. I really want to see how it would turn out.
