PARIS — At last, Emmanuel Macron stepped forth. The French president entered a vast arena this weekend, plunged into darkness and lit only by spotlights and glow sticks, before a crowd of 30,000 supporters in a domed stadium in the Paris suburbs.

It was a highly choreographed appearance — his first campaign rally for an election now less than a week away — with something of the air of a rock concert. But Mr. Macron had come to sound an alarm.

Do not think “it’s all decided, that it’s all going to go well,” he told the crowd, a belated acknowledgment that a presidential election that had seemed almost certain to return him to power is suddenly wide open.

I remember reading that General de Gaulle expressed fears for his beloved nation if too many people from Algeria decided to move to France. He even feared that his hometown might lose its French name!

In the US, expressing such a concern is considered very racist. Apparently, the only cultures that are allowed to have a culture are non-European and non-North American, which are all improperly "white" while any "black or brown" culture is to be fostered and is absolutely rightfully spread to other areas of the globe.

Of course, nobody said that. They just said that allowing too many people in with a different culture, regardless of color, would threaten the culture. It's not like you can add 10 million Chinese or Siberian or Australian people to France and expect the culture not to change. That's not saying their color is the issue. The US took in vast numbers of refugees from dozens of different cultures across numerous different time periods, and despite all the fearmongering our “culture” has remained just fine.
