"Freedom Of Speech" - Dixie Chicks

Of course these girls werent under legal pressure. They were under other sorts of pressure.
Im curious however, why did so many of you guys get so het up?

If some Brit pop star for example went to Germany and said 'I hate the Queen or I hate Tony Blair' no one in the UK would care. Whats the beef with you guys?
First, why should the chixie Dicks voice their politics? Who cares about the opinion of three empty headed barbie dolls? Shut up and sing. By the way this is not Britain, Germany of Biafra.

Apparently alot of the right wing country rednecks did care by the backlash that happened. I cant believe how people get there panties in a knot after what a bunch of celebrities said.

The dixie chicks should be lowered into a tank full of starved pirhana. :rofl

Well I suppose thats the point.

Whats so different about the US compared to Britain or Germany that such pressure is put on three female singers who voice their political opinion on stage in another country?

Where's the respect for the individual?

BTW wasnt 'shut up and sing' the title of some album of theirs or documentary about them?

The problem is that the majority of the Dixie Chick's fans are uptight redneck neocons; rabid backwoods cretins that are lucky if they can spell their own name, let alone understand music. And obviously if all they can think about to whine and bitch about is the political positions of a couple of country singers -- they need to get a LIFE OF THEIR OWN to worry about -- or better yet: GET A JOB.

The one thing the 'ex-fans' of the DC's forget to realize is just how many more loyal fans they got after they DID slam the pres! It gave them instant success and credibility and brought them out of the 'hick' genre into one that is much more respected by everyday people -- not just backwood's cretins....hahah!!

Their plan backfired and they know it -- though most won't admit it because they like the idea of thinking that they helped hurt someone's career, but they really HELPED their careers a great deal.

GOTTA LOVE IT!:)

You are way off the Dixie Dicks lost millions as radio refused to air their music and sponsors dumped them. Large concert promoters moved on to greener pastures. Granted the dicks came out with a big selling albumn a year after they ran their mouths but they lost mega bucks.

Perhaps they lost some money -- but they're still selling music and making a fortune -- not as if they weren't ALREADY raking in the bucks. Mocking the pres was the best thing they could do for their careers though, because now they won't be JUST remembered for being airhead country barbie-dolls, they'll actually be thought of as THINKING HUMANS. (Which I realize is very rare in the Country Music industry). Either way, they win -- YOU lose.

I just wished we had some artists with the balls that someone like J. Lennon had, who would have enough ingenuity, patriotism and a powerful enough voice to SHUT DOWN THE BLOOD FOR OIL CHARADE in the middle east, and land ole Dumbya, in GITMO where he SHOULD have been held after he got busted on his THIRD D.U.I.

It's just a good thing for Bush that LIES DON'T LEAVE SEMEN STAINS, because if they did, he'd probably be in federal prison for his lies, war crimes and TREASON.

The people who seem to CARE, are the hundreds of air-headed hick-a-billy wind-bags who hollered and whined when they criticised the worst president in US history! Since so many anti-Americans joined the boycott of the Dixie chicks -- it's VERY OBVIOUS who 'CARES' about what they said -- it was their retarded fans! Isnt' that obvious to you?

:rofl
So, to answer your first question: They SHOULD voice their political opinions because they are AMERICANS -- that's what we DO here in America -- we voice our opinions because we enjoy the FREEDOM to do so. If you don't like it, perhaps you'd be happier in the middle east?

The dixie chicks should be lowered into a tank full of starved pirhana. :rofl

Yeah, well so should Bush, but he should be 'dipped' in it very slowly over a period of days or weeks, so he gets the message of how much death and suffering his actions have caused others.

Right wing country rednecks.............that will get you the job every time.

Uh I have a job and a good one. Unlike what you right wingers think, not all of us minorities want government handouts I prefer to be in control of my own money.

Let us examine the above post from Ted Kennedys bar tender. Take first the expression, "uh". It is embarrassing enough to hear this non-word but to picture some Monica Lewinsky imitator actually sitting down and typing it out is as laughable as Balaack Obama bombing Pakistan. Secondly, take "I have a job...".While this cannot be denied or verified I think it is honorable for a liberal to walk up to the counter and say,"Welcome to McDonalds, may I help you?"

OH ho ho ho. Just like a typical right wing redneck "If minorities not looking for government handouts they're working in fast food" If you must know I work in retail management. With being a registered Republican what makes me liberal is because Im pro Union, pro gay rights and pro choice I like less government but nice try. Then again I could care less what some right wing trailer trash redneck like you thinks anyway.

Trailer trash.....want to compare W2"s? Are you also pro name calling?

Freedom of speech is about being legally protected when you talk. The public can hate you all they like and deliver as much social backlash as they please. The dixie chix had the legal right to say whatever they wanted, and their fans had the legal right to say whatever they wanted back. Frankly, I think that getting angry at an artist for political views is stupid, as I listen to their music and not their opinions.

If I don't like the politics it changes my opinion of them. They would do better to stick to what they are good at, and leave politics out of their repertoire. Careers in show business come and go, so it makes sense to walk on eggshells to some degree with politics. You can cut out a large fan base by being too vocal.

Freedom of speech is mostly misunderstood by those that want to scream in your ear then claim they are protected by the Bill of Rights. Damn near every time I have seen one person scream in anothers ear a punch is usually thrown. That is called "justice".

True they might do better to shut up and sing. However, their consciences wouldnt let them, so they followed their consciences. Id rather someone followed their conscience than not just in case they lose fans or money. Integrity is still important today to many people thank god.

As someone who is not a fan of country music, especially the Dixie Chickens, I can say their comments don't bother me in the least, but I find it rather pathetic they felt they need to bash America on foreign soil, initially.

Once they realized that the majority of their demographic was shunning them, they allied themselves with the anti war groups, of which there are many. Does anyone remember the Vote for Change Tour? It was comprised of artists such as Pearl Jam, REM, Dixie Chicks and Bruce Springstein who were essentially telling everyone they should vote for Kerry, even though the tour itself carried a heavy emphasis on anti was sentiment.

What amuses me most is that these same artists were quite prominent, yet virtually silent and had no dissenting opinions during our last administration's actions in Kosovo, Somalia, Baghdad and didn't seem to care when Halibturton was handed out a no bid contract. Where was all the criticism back then? Surely these artists didn't all just have a political epiphany at the same time? No, it's safe to say these people realize that it's much more popular to criticise an administration when the sitting president has an (R) after their name.

But you forget that many artists are not all-consumed by greed and pleasing their fans. Many artists have MUCH more important things to do than just entertain YOU. Look at John Lennon -- he was much more than just a musician. He brought the entire world together and was a very important political figure in the US -- it was due to his actions that stopped the war in Vietnam!

Increasing public awareness is an art in itself. If you don't like the things an artist says politically or about anything else, you have the choice to not purchase their albums or follow their careers. Of course people who would actually spend time worrying about that kind of petty BS in the first place need to get a life. If I look at everything I don't like about the artist that I'm being entertained by and used that to judge whether or not I would go see their movie or buy their records, I wouldn't wouldn't be entertained at all.
It's like Roman Polanski and the fact he went out with a 16 year old. I am not going to stop watching his amazing films because of a mistake he made in his early 30's. It's SHALLOW, PETTY and incredibly immature. This is the part of where ACCEPTANCE comes in --- When we begin to accept life on it's own terms, we don't need to worry about what is in other people's court.

Agh!!! John Lenno brought the entire world together!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "I read the news today oh boy...". I too read the news today and the world is a shattered mess, the same as it has been since it cooled down to support life. Those who patronize criminals such as Polanski only serve to feed the monster. You know what "monster" is don't you? It is Sharon Tates (Polanski's ex) mutilated body hanging upside down with her fetus ripped out by the Manson group. "Helter Skelter" another world saving John Lennon tune. Wake up!!

Most artists want the money, come on! John Lennon didn't get political till after he was a millionaire.

People are more aware today than in any time in history. I'm just saying some people, and apparently their gravy train of fans were more conservatively bent, so wisdom would say, keep the trap shut. They are a cute group to me, and I think Natalie Maines is a very talented little girl.

It's like Roman Polanski and the fact he went out with a 16 year old. I am not going to stop watching his amazing films because of a mistake he made in his early 30's. Polanski was 43 and the girl was 13. Even if he had been in his early thirties that showed incredibly poor judgment on his part. Thirty is no babe in arms. Gotta grow up sometime. To me, I can't look at the guy without thinking he's a perve.

True they might do better to shut up and sing. However, their consciences wouldnt let them, so they followed their consciences. Id rather someone followed their conscience than not just in case they lose fans or money. Integrity is still important today to many people thank god.

It was Natalie Maines' conscience. The other two girls weren't really part of it, but she sure took money out of their pockets. Course those sisters' know Maines is the "big talent", so they stuck by her. Boo, hoo. I think Maines figured she was in anti-Bush country, so she could get the crowd riled up, and it backfired. I'm not sure it was her conscience, or just a big, dumb, mouth.

They seem to have supported every word said so I cant say either way if they actually didnt want things this way and so far neither can you.

True, Maines may well have only sought to get the crowd riled up, she may also have sought to follow her conscience. However, One can only surmise that given that she took those actions, and being a grown up in charge of herself, that she meant to do it and was aware of the possible consequences and deliberatly paid the price.

You think that she definiatley paid a price and as such was stupid. Is your beef here that she lost money or what she said, or both?

BTW what did you think of Slyvester Stallone for doing the Rambo films at the expense of the enemy characters portrayed in those films?

Record sales put aside, I think the people who demonized the D.C.s should be ashamed to call themselves Americans. All those rednecks who said they were traitors simply because they expressed their opinion are full of ****. The D.C.'s weren't the only ones who felt the wrath of those over patriotic morons who think they're doing something by putting bumper stickers on their cars and a few ripped flags on their front porches. All the Dixie Chicks did was express their opinion. You can express yours back but to demonize somebody and call them a traitor for it is totally uncalled for. Same goes for the morons who came up with freedom fries when France decided to not take part in that **** sandwich we now have to eat called Iraq.

Man, when are these celebrity types ever going to realize that nobody wants to listen to their sh!t?

She said it off the cuff. Unprepared. The other girls were very surprised when she said it, and knew it was a no-no. I've read articles on it. They have stuck behind her because mainly she's their mealticket.

What enemy characters in the Rambo films? I'm no big fan of Stallone, and don't usually watch his films. Never even watched "Rocky" which was probably his best.

I'm saying her comments caused her and others a lot of grief.
