France has agreed to pay reparations to American Holocaust survivors who were deported to Nazi death camps in French trains, following a year of negotiations with the Obama administration. The agreement, a bilateral accord with the U.S. government to be signed Monday, includes a $60 million lump sum payment that will be distributed to eligible survivors, their spouses and, if applicable, their heirs.
Stuart Eizenstat, the State Department’s special adviser for Holocaust issues who negotiated the agreement, said that it was uncertain how many would apply for the compensation. But based on estimates and amounts paid in existing French government programs, survivors “could receive payment well over $100,000,” with “tens of thousands of dollars” for spouses of those who died in the camps or since World War II.

Bout damn time. I have no idea why there would be a loophole for US citizens that deserve compensation from French comepensation programs. Damn time it took so long, but glad it finally came.

Some of the most fierce anti-nazi resistance groups came from France. But im glad the anti-French sentiment is still alive in the US

If it weren't for the help of the Brits and us the French would have been subdued permanently.

This is no great altruism, they say they needed to pay this because the US wouldn't allow them to get some contracts today. There has to be more details than that they were just riding on French trains. Were the trains being driven by French railroadmen or Germans?

I think this is meaningless in the grand scheme of things. Though I am glad that the Obama administration negotiated these payments, it doesn't make up for the fact that it was the French government that allowed this to happen. I fully understand that Vichy France is long gone, however, the country has never apologized to what it did and this is a pretty empty gesture. The Holocaust survivors don't want money. They want the French people to acknowledge what was done. Where were the war tribunals hunting the enforcers of Vichy France? Why are the French depicted as surrender monkeys when the French public generally supported the pro-Axis measures of Vichy France? Answering these questions has far more relevance than payments made out to people who are, at the youngest, 70-80 years old.

IT's not even a gesture, it's a payoff:

"The agreement is also intended to close the door on pending state and federal legislation that would ban France’s state railway, known by its initials SNCF, or its foreign subsidiaries from winning contracts in this country.

An SNCF subsidiary, Keolis North America, is part of a consortium of private companies bidding to build and operate the $2.45 billion light-rail Purple Line between Montgomery and Prince George’s County. The 35-year contract, which eventually could total up to $6 billion, is scheduled to be awarded by the Maryland Transit Administration next spring, unless it is canceled by Maryland governor-elect Larry Hogan (R).

Why do the heirs get money as well?

Makes no sense. I get the survivors, fine, give them money, but why do the heirs get money? What did suffer through? Hearing their parents/grandparents stories? Makes no sense.

I think it's to remove any future attempts at litigation. By paying the families (and I think this is restricted to the children of the victims), the French government would not have to deal with any future lawsuits which claim some sort of discrimination. It also seems pretty in line with France's system for compensation.

The French government had nothing to do with the Holocaust and the French people didn't even know the death camps existed.
