What happened? People of France finally tired of dealing with ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS and allowing these Scum to terrorize the beloved country of France!!!

A shout out to the 80% of French who voted...showing up Americans and their pathetic 50% give or take.

Damn! I am impressed at the stand that they took and I thing that they are the worlds hope.

Who agrees?

O'Reilly has lifted his boycott of France as a result of the election

"NEW RULE: Conservatives have to stop rolling their eyes every-time they hear the word "France." Like just calling something "french" is the ultimate argument winner. As if to say, "What can be said about that was too stupid to get on board with our wonderfully conceived and brilliantly executed war in Iraq?"

calling something french is not the ultimate argument winner
But 'The French subsequently surrendered' is
and funny at that

I don't get this American excitement about the French presidential elections. This Sarkozy guy is from Union pour un mouvement populaire and Union pour un mouvement populaire was founded by Mr. Chirac. This is the same group that reigned there before.

There might be some differences, Mr. Sarkozy is expected to actually perform some reforms Mr. Chirac was planning and if he does this does not sound like good news for working people in France.

Mr. Chirac was probably more of a Gaullist than Mr. Sarkozy will ever be, this had advantages in foreign and especially European policy and it had disadvantages. It looks like more of the role of a European integrator will go to Germany for the next years.

I imagine it has to do with the olive branch he has offered
also I believe his election opens the door to a warming of our relationship
I dont think any american expects the French to send a battallion or 10s of 1000s of troops to Iraq
but a new chapter

as far as being from Chiracs party, so what
Bush and Reagan were from the same party, and they are very different in many areas

To be fair, countries with proportional representation always have a much higher voter turnout than those with a plurality voting system. I don't feel shown up by them. It's not our fault our system sucks.

Proportional representation means that the more votes your party gets, the more representation they will have in the government. It makes it much more likely that people will get out and vote, because their vote means their beliefs have more power.

A plurality system like our means that whoever has the most votes wins it all. What's the point in getting off your *** and voting if you already know your guy is going to win...or lose for that matter.

Anyway, that's why historically, countries with proportional representation have a much higher voter turnout. An individual's vote counts for more.

I think it is precisely the electorate's fault.

Only to a certain degree. It would take a tremendous amount of effort to change the system, large portions of the constitution would have to be re-written. While there might be a politician here and there who might vote that way, by and large the only people who can change the status quo have everything to lose if they do. What politician is going to willingly give up their power?

are you saying than that in proportional representation, the citizens vote for a party or party platform and the seats are given out proportionately to each party , who than decides who will fill those seats?

There'in lies the problem. An honest one (myth.)

That's how it usually works.

There was/is a district in Georgia that looked like a snake.

Term limits Bodi, term limits I say.

That's the root cause, gerrymandering is just a by product of incumbancy, this nations true internal problem. Besides Billo.

The Germans are in a complete roll at the moment, their future seems very bright if you look at whats happening in Germany today and what this relatively small country is in comparison to the US and China for example. Germany is the world largest exporter, they produce tons of high tech goods, and their workforce is the best in the world.
Not only that but despite the VAT rise, the German economy seems to be moving ahead faster than any time since east/west reunion, their governments are finally unleashing some extra power by reducing corporate taxes, and making it easier and more flexible for businesses to establish or remain in Germany. Not only this, Germany have a mega surplus economy.

But hey, if France creates a more flexible labour policy, lower taxes for people in general, lower taxes a lot for businesses, and then makes France a multilingual country, France will be the most prosperous country in the world.

I think its great to see a Conservative elected to run the French Government.....

Stop fooling yourself. A "Conservative" in France is still a socialist and Sarkozy is a Neo-Gaullist to boot! Sarkozy served as Minister of the Interior and Minister of Finance under Chirac, Minister of the Budget under Mitterrand, and held top positions in two powerful political parties. I have no reason to believe that Sarkozy will do anything different than whats been done over the last 10 years, given his performance while serving in all of those positions, and neither should you. Like all politicians, he said what he had to say to get elected and it's as simple as that. The only real difference between him and Chirac is that he sugar coats his disagreement with our foreign policy.

Word. I hear you bro.

We have the same shiat here...Term Limits that coincide with Re-districting is a great "Peoples" two-step that would limit the power of the entrenched parties and give it, THE VOTING POWER!, back to the people...

Also Lobbying and a Third Party are issues hat need to be addressed IMHO.
