France bans citizen journalists from reporting violence
By Peter Sayer, IDG News Service

The French Constitutional Council has approved a law that criminalizes the filming or broadcasting of acts of violence by people other than professional journalists. The law could lead to the imprisonment of eyewitnesses who film acts of police violence, or operators of Web sites publishing the images, one French civil liberties group warned on Tuesday.

The council chose an unfortunate anniversary to publish its decision approving the law, which came exactly 16 years after Los Angeles police officers beating Rodney King were filmed by amateur videographer George Holliday on the night of March 3, 1991. The officers’ acquittal at the end on April 29, 1992 sparked riots in Los Angeles.
Macworld: News: France bans citizen journalists from reporting violence

Got to love how highly the EU regards free speech.

And they say the US has retarded laws?! haha

"The law, proposed by Minister of the Interior Nicolas Sarkozy, is intended to clamp down on a wide range of public order offenses. During parliamentary debate of the law, government representatives said the offense of filming or distributing films of acts of violence targets the practice of “happy slapping,” in which a violent attack is filmed by an accomplice, typically with a camera phone, for the amusement of the attacker’s friends.

The broad drafting of the law so as to criminalize the activities of citizen journalists unrelated to the perpetrators of violent acts is no accident, but rather a deliberate decision by the authorities, said Cohet.
"

People are attacking others and filming it for entertainment, so let's ban filming violence altogether. How freaking stupid!

Pathetic. Why banning citizen journalists? Well at least there is still youtube. You can ban traditional publication, but the internet, good luck with that.

First off, the law has some consequences that even the lawmakers are first now seeing and chances are the law will be changed.

Secondly it has nothing to do with free speech, but to tackle a serious crime.

In Europe we have a thing called "happy slapping", which is usually kids filming assults on others and sending them to their friends. Now these assults (a slap or punch) can be arranged between the people involved or totaly random. This is what the law is suppose to adresse. And belive me its a serious problem among teenagers.

I agree that it has gone too far, but I also see the need to to adresse the problem somehow.

And I somehow doubt it will pass the EU court system really, as it goes against a few of the basic rules of the EU as far as I can see.

But feel free to France bash as in this case its some what warrented, even though the bashing should be against the lawmakers who proposed such a stupid written law and not the nation it self.

Uh uh
So So Def
Yeah yeah

Chorus: Jermaine Dupri and Jay Z

[Jermaine Dupri]
In the Ferrari or Jaguar switchin four lanes
With the top down screamin out
Money ain't a thang

[Jay Z]
Bubble hard in the double R flashin the rings
With the window cracked holler back
Money ain't a thang

[Jermaine Dupri]
Jigga I don't like it if it don't gleam clean
And to hell with the price
cause the money ain't a thang

[Jay-Z]
Put it down hard for my dogs that's locked in the bang
When you hit the bricks, new whips
Money ain't a thang

[Jermaine Dupri]
Come on, y'all wanna floss wit us
Cause all across the ball we burn it up
Drop a little paper, baby toss it up
Ya slackin on your pimpin, turn it up
See the money ain't a thang

[Jay-Z]
I flex the rol', sign a check for yo' hoe
Jigga's style is love, X and O
Save all your accolades, just the dough
My game is wide, all lames aside
Tryin to stay alive, hundred thou' for the bracelet
Foolish, ain't I? The chain'll strain ya eye
Twin platinum gun son, aim for the sky
Ice on my bullet, you die soon as I pull it
Willies wanna rub shoulders, your money's too young
See me when it gets older, ya bank account grow up
Mine's is one-zero-zero-zero-zero-oh-doub'
Damn near out the rear trunk when I roll up
Multi til I close up, it's all basic
I been spending hundreds since they had small faces
Rob your stash house, doubled out down in Vegas
Me and Jermaine Dupri got it locked crazy
Where you at haters?

OMG
kids are slapping/punching each other
WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TOO
i remember growing up being afraid of silly things like knives and guns

now these evil lil bastards are slapping each other
OH THE HUMANITY

French law is significantly different from American law in terms of freedom's and court cases also are far different . However, this is still a terrible law. Happy slapping are a problem, but this law is far too broad in scope. At the bare minimum, it should exclude acts of violence from the police or other government figures. It would be better to create a law that states conspiring to film a crime is illegal, not the actual filming itself. Essentially, premeditated filming is illegal, while on the spot filming is not. This accurately stops happy slapping, while letting witnesses gather video evidence as well.

It's actually a lot worse then that. Kids are starting fights just to video tape them and put them on YouTube and for what? Views? People have been put in hospitals for views. They had a good idea in mind but as usual failed to come up with a law that has anything to do with the problem. Go figure. Useless politicians.

wow
starting fights to post on youtube
is that better than starting fights because the other person is from a rival fraternity? or a rival town? or a rival school?

i dont get it
kids fight, get over it

First rule of ..... almost got me there. What a bunch of ***** wipped bitches.

A) Hell ya rock on, I'll watch that, I'll engage in that, and I'll tape that, good times had by all.

B) What's the big ****ing deal? Never been in a fight? How much can you know about yourself, if you've never been in a fight? I don't wanna die without any scars.

You don't understand yet. It's harder to say "I didn't start it" when there is clear evidence that you did. It would have been a way to stop what has become a dangerous trend with the YouTube generation. You know...starting fights just to video tape them?

Oh come on sound off like you got a pair.

I do but I believe if you're going to fight somebody, video tape it and run the risk of local police seeing it and arresting you for w/e reasons. Do it for something a little bigger then YouTube. Just saying though. I could be wrong.

Touche, but with gloves on it's a different story.

What, with the relentless way so many European posters drive home the obvious superiority of the European way of life, do we need anything more to convice us than the popularity of this videotaping of random acts of violence along the official response to such?

I know I have been on the fence for some time, but now I am now certainly convinced.

yes, Europe is definitely superior.

should i waste my time with a google search of adolescents who are hospitalized every day just due to random violence in the neighborhood
just because it aint on youtube, dont mean it doesnt happen every day, all day

Thats not the ****ing point DeeJayH. Please read carefully. I'm not saying the violence is not happening because it's not on YouTube. I'm simply saying they're trying to discourage the practice of starting random fights for the sake of popularity on Web 2.0 sites.
