The modern GOP really is something. They launched a PR campaign to rehabilitate the term "socialism" by re-branding it as "everything people like," they made the Affordable Care Act popular by trying to take it away, and now contra Reagan they've made "I'm from the government and I'm here to help" the nine most welcome words in the English language.

I think the damage the GOP does when in power is simply too catastrophic to ever justify allowing it on a purely strategic basis, but I at least understand those on the left who think giving the GOP a few years to **** everything up every now and then is hugely helpful for winning over converts and massively shifting public opinion.

Fox News Poll: Big shift in asking government to 'lend me a hand' amid pandemic, unrest
The latest Fox News survey shows a reversal in what voters seek from leaders in Washington.

The poll asks voters to choose one of two messages to send to the federal government right now -- “lend me a hand” or “leave me alone.” A majority of 57 percent says they would ask Washington to “lend me a hand.”

Last year, just 34 percent asked for a hand-up (February 2019). The previous high was 44 percent in 2011, after the financial crisis.

The reality of Government is Socialism is finally registering with the right wing?

Actually, in the wake of the left’s gutting of police departments, this isn’t actually that surprising.

What the hell do you expect some people to live on when their states shut down their economies?
Many are asking the federal government to help them, but it's not due to any fault of their own.
Have you conveniently forgotten that there is a pandemic ravaging the country?

Nobody is for gutting the police, we are for gutting the killers out of the departments all over these here united states of america.

What do I have to do with any police departments? I don't handle their budgets. But hey, it sounded good right?

Hey, X. How are localities supposed to fund their public services, given the drop in tax revenues due to the current economy? I know most conservatives want to think it's all a "BLM" secret plot - but people are actually hurting. It's not only police we're going to need to worry about, it's all public services.

This is such BS. I haven’t heard one lefty here stand up for the value of police as a whole.

Hey Lurch, are you actually denying that certain localities are “defunding” police in response to BLM demands? I said nothing about a “secret plot”. It’s no secret want BLM supporters want. It ****ing says it on their signs if you don’t believe me.

This is a straight-up lie, since none of that is in effect yet.

Here’s another post by X Factor that is a complete lie.

No help for the average American

But the federal reserve has promised to do whatever is necessary to save the stock market and the wealth of the wealthy

America under GOP control

I can't speak for all localities. I can speak for departments in the Seattle area including my own town. Also, "Defunding" is a poor choice of a word. What's being proposed is a relocation of funds to other services so that the police aren't being asked to perform services other than law enforcement - such a marriage counseling and mental health practice.

Lol, sure.

TrumpQins approve of the quotes by Trump of ‘Let Cities Rot’ and ‘California Fires Are In a Blue State’ lies, forgetting where our economy is.

TrumpQins are down with removing mailboxes and sorting machines in black and brown locales.

Trump supporters enjoy seeing Veterans, the Elderly and Rural folks get ****ed over by not receiving their medications and medical devices on time.

Defunding means exactly what it sounds like. If I support defunding Planned Parenthood, it’s pretty understood that I do not support Planned Parenthood, same with those that support defunding police no matter how they try making it more palatable. None of this is geared toward making things better for police, afterall, according to many on your side, all cops are bastards.

Is this really a mystery? The state governments literally put them out of work by shutting down their places of work. Now the people are are telling them they need help. What does this have to do with the GOP?

I have never understood why so many GOP people think that helping each other and being a family is socialistic.

Ever since time began, a family stays together, helps each others, bends over backward to the benefit of all, and gain success as a group.

This idea that success is individually accomplished is pure bunk. There are always people involved in anyone's success even when they are not part of your own family. Tell me how anyone could have achieved anything without having teachers, bankers, garbage disposal people, clerks, food pickers, etc. We all need each other in one way shape or form and the better each of us is, the better the whole group is and does.

That is NOT socialism. It is family values.

By the same token and what has to be always remembered is that extremes are bad. Yes, if a person takes advantage of others for their own personal benefit without it benefiting the whole, that person need to pay the price and be left out of the family. Nonetheless, more often that not that type of thinking is the extreme and not the norm. Extremes are always bad but the base idea of working together and helping each other is good and the GOP continuously tries to make it a horrible thing to do, to care about those around you.

Yes, I think is it a great idea to change the title of socialism to that of "everything that people like"

Lol, sure.

It's not an accurate generalization. There are a variety of views on the matter from the extreme (elimination of the police) to the more centrist (reforms). If you accept that kind of generalization, then I'll assume you have no objection to the ones that label people on the right as racists etc.

Thinking of people as monoliths is part of the problem we need to overcome, lest this country continue to devolve.

WE can only go by what the DEm leaders are telling us.
“Defunding police means defunding police,” the congresswoman said in a statement. “It does not mean budget tricks or funny math. It does not mean moving school police officers from the NYPD budget to the Department of Education’s budget so the exact same police remain in schools.”

Ocasio-Cortez said that cutting the police budget is not effective if it does not result in the reduced presence of law enforcement.

“It does not mean counting overtime cuts as cuts, even as NYPD ignores every attempt by City Council to curb overtime spending and overspends on overtime anyways,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “If these reports are accurate, then these proposed ‘cuts’ to the NYPD budget are a disingenuous illusion. This is not a victory. The fight to defund policing continues.”

Can you show us what police departments have been gutted? I know there is a lot of talk, but so far, I don't see any evidence.

That happens all the time so, yes, what’s good for the goose and all that.
