Not in the short term and not when gathering usable intelligence.. But is has been found effective in getting a "confession" (often false) over the ages.

Americans think that their war criminals should get "respect" but Nazi war criminals and other US described boogeymen du jour don't deserve respect.

Just consider how many US war criminals/US terrorists there were/are living among you when the USA has been at war for 93% of its years as a rogue nation.

Look at all the US infrastructure that is named after US war criminals/terrorists. Perhaps Arizona will name one of their sewage treatment facilities after McCain?

That's true, I suppose if one's goal is to just get someone to say something, it's a great method. People will typically say whatever you want them to say under torture.
 
IMHO these attacks on McCain and others can be laid directly at the feet of Trump.
His attacks on McCain have been below disgusting, but what else can one expect from Cadet Bonespurs

That's why I'm amazed at this name calling of McCain. The torture caused him to admit to crimes that he never committed. As if that's something that we should attack him for.
 
I highly doubt FoxNews is going to win friends and influence people going about the argument this way. But to the audience clinging to everything FoxNews says there will be passive acceptance (at least.)

Some do. Many do not. While Haspel was involved, many were, and the Senate/House were more than well aware of it. Then add in those in the general public that supported it.

First of all, let me state that I believe that torture has no place in a civilized society, so anyone who tries to claim that I'm saying otherwise can stuff it right now...


From a strictly intellectual POV, torture can be very good at extracting information, but it has to be done correctly. It takes multiple people being tortured to confirm that the information is correct and it takes a very tightly controlled set of questions. If you're asking someone "Are your troops on hill 27?" gets you an answer that's going to be influenced by the torturer. If you ask "Which hill are your troops on?", then the results are much more accurate, especially when confirmed by multiple sources.

I've always liked the tactic used by the British. They'd bring a large group of people who had the information they wanted and shut them up in isolated cells where they were uncomfortable. Too cold/hot, bad food, filthy conditions, etc. They'd blindfold them all bring them together into a common room where there were already a couple of British agents planted. They'd tell the people that if they would talk, they'd get good food and a clean comfortable room. All they had to do was stand up and be escorted out of the room and no one would know who it was. Then, if no one volunteered, one of the planted agents would stand up and they'd make sure that everyone knew that someone had apparently volunteered to talk. In almost 100% of the cases, there would be others who follow, since if the information was already being shared, why suffer for no reason?
 
The party that claims to be the most patriotic continues to drag a POW through the mud based specifically on that fact. Really shocking stuff.

Before the US lied as it always does and illegally invaded Vietnam, it was there on the ground torturing and killing innocents, as it always does, to show the world that it is "the beacon of freedom". The Vietnamese people wanted their independence and they even fashioned their declaration around the hypocritical US declaration.

McCain, the war criminal/terrorist, took part in this massive series of war crimes. How many did he commit against Cambodia, Laos?

The USA has a long long history of torture and the US hasn't just had Repuglican presidents. Torture and CIA are synonyms.
