Geographically, culturally and politically. Germany and Japan were loose allies at best. And actually in terms of strategic coordination Japan attacking Russia instead of the US and Western powers would've made more sense as far as supporting Germany's surprise offensive against Stalin and Russia. Although Stalin probably shouldn't have been surprised by Hitler's treachery if he had simply read Hitler's Mein Kampf. After that Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill formed an odd alliance along the lines of the enemy of my enemy is my friend. At least temporarily anyways. So if one was in search of an intermediary to try to dissuade Hitler from pursuing some reckless course of action. Who would be the one you might look to? Not Tojo or Hirohito that's for sure. This conflict between the ethnic Ukrainians and the ethnic Russians Ukrainians has been going on for hundreds of years and became worse with the breakup of the USSR. It was a cold civil war. Then Ukraine started making language laws and things that austrasized the Russian Ukrainians. Tensions grew in the Russian regions of Ukraine.
