NEW YORK (Reuters) - Former New York City mayor and billionaire Michael Bloomberg is giving $1.8 billion to Johns Hopkins University for student financial aid at his alma mater, Bloomberg said in an opinion piece published on Sunday in The New York Times.

Bloomberg, the founder and chief executive of global media company Bloomberg LP, said the money will used for aid for qualified low and middle-income students and will make the Baltimore, Maryland university’s admissions permanently “need-blind.”

You have to admire him for his compassion & generosity. If he decides to run in 2020, he could self-fund. I'd vote for him.

Putting that into some perspective is worth noting, IMHO. Bloomberg gave away just under 4% of his (estimated) net worth of $46.3B (for this politically valuable free publicity?) which would be the equivalent of someone giving away about $3.2K who had the US median net worth of about $80K. Of course, a gift of that size (under $4K) would not likely be considered newsworthy.

He's given a lot in the past, too. A daughter of my wife's friend goes to JH & Bloomberg's name is on a lot of buildings there.

This gift is newsworthy because of Bloomberg being a prospective candidate for the WH in 2020. Of course, Trump will likely label him 'Little Mikey.'
