A former Canadian diplomat named Michael Kovrig who is now working for the international Crisis Group in China has been arrested and detained by Chinese authorities. The reasons for the arrest are unclear at this time. Is this a tit-for-tat reprisal by China for the arrest of Ms. Meng Wanzhou, a CFO for Huawei industries or is it an isolated incident? Input and opinions please.

Definitely tit-for-tat, just decided to make up charges to trey and get back at us. Like I said in another thread, it is ironic a country with kangaroo courts, death squads, and concentration camps is complaining about Canada following proper legal procedures.

Wonder when the Drama Llama will wake up and realize that China is a threat. And he wants to discuss a free trade deal with them.

Turns out they were acting like spies before their arrest

Looks like China's claim has some ground?

One of the two Canadians jailed by China for nearly three years in a case that was at the heart of a diplomatic crisis is seeking a multimillion-dollar settlement from Ottawa, two sources say,
alleging he was detained because he unwittingly provided intelligence on North Korea to Canada and allied spy services.

Michael Spavor alleges that the deception was conducted by fellow Canadian prisoner Michael Kovrig, and it was intelligence work by the latter that led to both men’s incarceration by Chinese authorities, according to the sources.
These allegations cast a new light on the lengthy imprisonment of Mr. Kovrig and Mr. Spavor as well as on the work that Mr. Kovrig was doing in China.

China arrested Mr. Spavor and Mr. Kovrig in December, 2018, on allegations of espionage in the aftermath of Canada’s detention of Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou on a U.S. extradition warrant.

The sources said Mr. Phillips is alleging that his client was arrested by China because of information that he shared with Mr. Kovrig. That information, he alleges, was later passed on,
unbeknownst to Mr. Spavor, to the Canadian government and its Five Eyes spy-service partners in the course of Mr. Kovrig’s duties as a diplomat with the Foreign Affairs department’s Global Security Reporting Program.

Anyone who really thought about it knew both were spying to a certain degree

A Canadian tight with North Korea, like he would not be used for intelligence

The other gathering info for ICG a Soros funded org

If you are of the mindset to spend considerable time in an authoritarian regime country and are unable to scope out the political risks involved beforehand due to very public news events such as the Huawei woman's arrest perhaps triggering animosity - you rolled the dice unwisely by staying there.

How many of us, reading the news today about Argentina's election of a rightist populist currying political points by resurrecting the Falklands nonsense, would travel there for an extended period while wearing "Union Jack" lapel pins?

Why the **** would anyone choose to live in China?

For the same kinds of reasons quite a few Americans take their RV's into certain parts of Mexico. CHEAP! Or why a lot of single middle aged men from all over the planet were/are spending time in Thailand!
There can be one of any number of reasons why people would live in China, but going there knowing it is a very authoritarian country with it's interfering activities present in every other country, you would think 'easily recognizable' people (gweilo/gwailou) would be aware that the proverbial fecal matter could hit the rotary air movement device over any one a thousand things either real or manufactured that would be deemed a minor infraction by truly free democracies.

Well, then it sucks to be him.

Because it actually is a great place

If you stay out of politics it is very safe, you can travel everywhere, the people are great.

The police are actually friendly and won't beat you or shoot you.

If you want drugs, don't go to China or are political don't go to China

Michael Spavor reaches settlement with federal government over detention in China

Michael Spavor has reached a settlement with the Canadian government over his detention in China.

Citing two sources, Radio-Canada reports that the total settlement is for $7 million.

John Philips, Spavor's lawyer, told CBC News that the matter between his client and the government "has been resolved" but would not offer any further comment.

A $ 7 million dollar payout by the Canadian government for nothing or because they were spies and the payout is to keep him quiet?
