Florida teachers told to remove books from classroom libraries or risk felony prosecution

Just wow :(

Teachers in Manatee County, Florida, are being told to make their classroom libraries — and any other "unvetted" book — inaccessible to students, or risk felony prosecution. The new policy is part of an effort to comply with new laws and regulations championed by Governor Ron DeSantis (R). It is based on the premise, promoted by right-wing advocacy groups, that teachers and librarians are using books to "groom" students or indoctrinate them with leftist ideologies.

Kevin Chapman, the Chief of Staff for the Manatee County School District, told Popular Information that the policy was communicated to principals in a meeting last Wednesday. Individual schools are now in the process of informing teachers and other staff.

Teachers in Manatee County lamented the news on social media. "My heart is broken for Florida students today as I am forced to pack up my classroom library," one Manatee teacher wrote on Facebook.

Another Manatee teacher called the directive "a travesty to education" that interfered with efforts to "connect with books and develop [a] love of lifelong learning."

They should put all the books which are disallowed in a storage cabinet or room and put a Masterlock padlock on the door. Those things are cheap to get from Walmart.

They should also make sure to tell the students what they've done and that they are not allowed into that room.

Edit: Any student who is caught breaking in should have the reason for why they're not allowed to see those books explained to them.

Oh really? More money doesn't buy more qualified personnel? WellsFargo pays its CEO $24,500,000 a year. Why do you think they pay him that amount and what do you think would happen to schools if you started paying teachers one hundredth of his salary? If money doesn't matter why do you think corporations fight to reduce their taxes.

You elected the school board that runs your schools. If you don't think you are getting a good return for you money why do you keep electing the same local school board members over and over.
Yup and reforms are in the works despite the teachers unions resistance

Am a leftist, but haven't met many pedos. Hint: pedophilia us not a partisan problem:

I suspect that the reason most people view pedophilia as a democrat problem is two fold.
  1. Most Child molestation is done by public school employees. Because of the teachers unions, public schools are associated with the extreme left. This welds pedophilia to leftism - right or wrong.
  2. The democrat party has made sexual grooming of children a major initiative of the party.
As such, the general view is that child molesters are leftists. Add in the Jeffrey Epstein angle and it's going to be hard for the left to escape the association.

Teachers don't micromanage how parents run their homes.

Not sure that's true.

Teachers who undermine parents by proselytizing homosexuality and trans sexuality behind the backs of parents are very much interfering with how parents run their homes.

1 reform is cleaning up the materials that teachers are allowed to expose our children to.

Stuff that hurts white folks' feelings. I assume that excludes excludes class auctions.

Agreed. The people that live in the school district that pay taxes into it own the school it's their property. So they with the consult of educators should be the ultimate decider of what books are there and yeah the devil is in the details but that's the system for which we have to work out the details
I don't imagine children do either. These days I have thousands of books in the palm of my hand. Don't need a library it's in some server somewhere.
I would say on this not necessarily. An educator would know a good one at least would know how to captivate children to get them to want to learn about history or literature or various other things. This doesn't necessarily mean they know best at what a child is ready for. It really is hard thing to gauge because this child who lives at home with a teenaged older sibling and maybe a cousin living with him is exposed to a little more society than this little girl over here is raised by Mormon parents and who just barely decided not to homeschool her. These agents develop at different light rates. So it would be impossible for a teacher to keep track of thousands of different kids. So there needs to be a general structure that is challenging but just enough to keep them more advanced kids intrigued but not so much that it causes the less advanced to recoil and this is the Crux of education. This is the balance they struggle with
there's definitely that but there's definitely some stuff in school libraries that shouldn't be there.

The reality is if we didn't talk about it most kids wouldn't know about it I've heard this referred to as the Streisand effect I'm sure there was another name for it before that.

I remember when I was in fifth grade I liked reading I'm one of those weirdos and I found a book about Greek mythology and in this book there were nude drawings of Hercules or Medusa or Perseus you know all the different characters in mythology. I got it because I wanted to read it all the other kids saw a giant thick book and said no. Until they saw the pictures.

Lol, parents are not a monolith. Let's just have parents monitor their kids and let the library provide a wide a variety of literature in an effort to attract as many readers as possible.

The goal of public education is to create a love of reading in young people, not to cater to a loud minority of sexuality repressed parents who don't trust their children and seem to want to destroy public education anyway..

If I could, I'd like this hundreds of times.

This piece of shit actually thinks being fascist as hell like this will get him the White House.

Lol, parents are not a monolith.
yeah hence democracy which you people seem to hate. They vote on it.

No that's anti democracy. The library is the property of the tax payer. They get to dictate what is kept there.

You don't like democracy because if leans against filth.

if it's a lot minority they'll get over room by the majority. That's democracy.

You want a loud minority to have control because you hate democracy.

This is just to promote filth. That's why the majority is wrong because they have sense.

Your way limits book selection, my way expands it. Education is about expanding. You're way simply contradicts what education is all about. It's also absurd. Like electing principals. Good Lord.

So freedom of speech is subject to the whims of the majority?

Perhaps a civics class is in order.

He's fighting fascists that want filth in children's libraries.
He is a fascist. Banning books is one of the things they are famous for.

Perhaps some history classes too.

??? The library is a government entity it is subject to the people as in no freedom of speech. It's okay because it's not a person.

If you want to have a private library with all the porno you want you can. There is no law against that and I wouldn't support it. But you aren't entitled to the ability to collect taxes to pay for it.
Perhaps a civics class is in order.
Yeah it could really help you. A government entity doesn't have the right to defy the people it serves.

There is, of course, precedence for this.

He is a fascist.
No he's fighting fascists. A group of power drunk assclowns (school board) insisting they collect taxes from people while saying **** you we are in charge is precisely what fascism is.

They need to be brought to heel. They are the bitch of the taxpayer.
Banning books is one of the things they are famous for.
He's not banning books. You can buy them you can read them. He's just saying that the fascist school board doesn't have the right to expose the children in the school to pornography and filth on the taxpayers dime.

If you want your 9 year old reading perverted shit you can buy it for them.
Perhaps some history classes too.
You're good at listing things you need.

“The Democrat(ic) Party has made sexual grooming of children a major initiative of the party.” Didn’t know that. Will have to keep an eye on the kids at our next meeting.

But congratulations. Paranoia, slander and idiocy wrapped up in one sentence.

If you show a government making books unavailable to buy then you have a point.

But the taxpayer gets to decide democratically what they want.

The people that hate democracy (you) can't tolerate that because filth is generally not something people want children exposed to in school.

Lol.

Take civics class. The 1st ammendment applies exclusively to the government. No one else.
