Florida teachers told to remove books from classroom libraries or risk felony prosecution

Teachers in Manatee County, Florida, are being told to make their classroom libraries — and any other "unvetted" book — inaccessible to students, or risk felony prosecution. The new policy is part of an effort to comply with new laws and regulations championed by Governor Ron DeSantis (R). It is based on the premise, promoted by right-wing advocacy groups, that teachers and librarians are using books to "groom" students or indoctrinate them with leftist ideologies.

Kevin Chapman, the Chief of Staff for the Manatee County School District, told Popular Information that the policy was communicated to principals in a meeting last Wednesday. Individual schools are now in the process of informing teachers and other staff.

Teachers in Manatee County lamented the news on social media. "My heart is broken for Florida students today as I am forced to pack up my classroom library," one Manatee teacher wrote on Facebook.

Another Manatee teacher called the directive "a travesty to education" that interfered with efforts to "connect with books and develop [a] love of lifelong learning."

Kids of the same age vary widely in what written material they can and cannot comprehend. How can a teacher know what to ban?

Who the hell defines what's appropriate for a grade level? Isn't it teachers who do that? How can you lock them up for it?

This whole thing scares me silly. It's straight out of The Fascist Handbook, Chapter 1.

What qualifies as "pornography?"
What material is or is not "suited to student needs?"
Who decides what material is or is not "appropriate?"

Isn't it the right wing that has decried censorship lately? Or is it only censorship when you aren't the one deciding what books to yank off of shelves?

Do you genuinely believe that teachers are trying to shovel children into sex trafficking rings?

This has been true since books were invented. The idea of educating kids is to expose them to ideas they don't get at home. Otherwise it's not education, is it?

It absolutely is censorship. Who gets to determine what is and is not ok is the same people who are responsible for turning out productive adults, the parents.

Teachers are hired to teach specific materials not their ideological agenda. They will comply to community standards and like it. Well they don't have to like it but they do have to do it. It's called a job.
