maybe we can get the feds to pay to clean up the mess at the southern border -although since they dont care about spending i doubt they would care either way. but the border is in shambles
ne Florida homeowner, Jack Bartkus, explained that he was left to deal with the seacraft after "about 20 people that rode on this boat from Cuba and [the government] took the people into custody [but] they didn’t do anything with the boat."

"They left it here and just discarded it," Bartkus said. "So it became my problem."
There’s diesel fuel on there," he said. "You can’t have an oil spill and to have this thing floating out on the water, it’s unsafe for other people."

Key Colony Beach officials told local residents in a letter that migrant boats were their problem, not the government’s. "f any vessel ends up on your private property [it] becomes your problem. This rule of law is both inconvenient and a bit expensive, but it is the law."

a video of DeSantis addressing the migrant boat crisis directly.

"There’s vessels left everywhere [on] people’s property," DeSantis said. "We declared a state of emergency. We provided [the] Coast Guard the assistance that they’ve asked for. We are going to clear the vessels free of charge for those residents because it wasn’t their fault."

It is DeSantis who turns a blind eye to the Cuban migrants. He sees them as potential Republicans and he certainly isn't interested in angering his Cuban voters who gave him the last election

this isn't about "angering Cubans". They come by boat, and the resident property owners are hit with the bill
(no matter their nationality) to mitigate the environmental damage.
Florida is picking up the tab because of the state of emergency

DeSantis said Friday the migrants have overwhelmed local authorities and the state will deploy air assets, including airplanes and helicopters from the Florida National Guard, to bolster existing Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission marine patrol units.

Under the state of emergency, some DeSantis administration officials will have the authority to suspend the effect of any state law, rule or order that may block them from responding to the situation.

In declaring the emergency, DeSantis -- considered a frontrunner for the Republican Party's presidential nomination in 2024 -- blamed the Biden administration for the situation.

Its not just Biden fault, the problem goes back decades. But Biden is soley responsible for federal law enforcement and commanding the resources to protect national security, at the moment, with congress providing oversight. If people are able to just get in a boat and land on US soil, that is a major security failure.

Is there a problem with this?

The small municipal community doesn't have the resources to bail-out the homeowner, so the state stepped-in.

You are very naive if you think that DeSantis isn't handling Cuban migrants with kid gloves. The GOP version of the "replacement theory"

Why doesn't DeSantis change the law?

ya that's actually a good thing. the background is the Cubans and Haitians coming to Fl in small craft

Most Cubans still come thru the southern border, as "wet foot dry foot" was ended by Obama and warned by Mayorkas they would be subject to interception..i fail to see what you mean by your claims

well they can wade across the Rio or cross in the desert as "get aways" so the boat migrants are a very small population compared

Last month Cubans accounted for the largest, and fastest growing segment of migrants.

But these are the good migrants, not illegals from Mexico!

ps. It's not people who walk across borders who are a threat to the working class, it's people who travel in jets.

@anatta Cubans have been floating to the Keys in droves since last summer. Don't you wonder why Desantis is being mostly mum about them even though it is happening in his own backyard?

Which explains why Florida Latinos have been going "Red" the last few election cycles.

Cubans in the Keys?

Who would have thought!

People who walk across borders ILLEGALY are a potential threat to everyone.

Where did DeSantis send the ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS that landed in Florida on that boat?

That is the real question?

The Cuban illegals? They are probably in a Miami Hampton Inn. He wants their potential votes and doesn't want to upset his Cuban supporters.

You think that is the case? I doubt it. I am certain he gathered them all up and flew them to some evil Sanctuary City north of the Mason Dixon line.

The point of the article is not to argue that there is some kind of problem with the state stepping in. The point of the article is to create an excuse for this graphic:

I bet the wall would have stopped that boat! MAGA!

(But, really, Chomsky: people reading and pumping the article as OP did is the other half of the reason for the article. It's certainly not national news. The state fixed the problem that its own laws created (people being responsible for boats landing on their property). The problem went away.

But quote some pissed off property owners who just want to rant about immigrants, float that picture, and the base gets some red meat to fuel their day)

You do realize that Florida is not the Southern border right?
