Florida authorities reportedly recovered explosive materials called the "Mother of Satan" by terrorist groups like al Qaeda from the home of a man who said he was trying to make fireworks.

The explosive chemical, triacetone triperoxide, played a role in the 2017 Manchester bombing and 2015 Paris attacks, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood told NBC News Tuesday night.

"It’s so volatile, so dangerous that al Qaeda calls it the 'Mother of Satan,' ” Chitwood said.

TATP has no application in fireworks but it is useful for bringing down passenger aircraft. It's ease of production in an airplane rest room is the reason why DHS tightened up the regs on what amount of liquids you can carry through airport security.

It is not useful for bringing down passenger aircraft, it has literally never been successful in this task and never once has TSA actually prevented an attempt to use this chemical.

How are you so sure about that? See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acetone_peroxide. It has been made & used successfully a number of times so why not in an airplane lavatory?

It is called "Mother of Satan" because it is especially difficult to work with. It is extremely volatile during mixing. In a controlled environment it is dangerous as hell.

Have you... been in an aircraft lavatory?

High concentration hydrogen peroxide was recently added to the Homeland Security list of the 300 most dangerous chemicals. In response, Amazon and Ebay banned the sale of it, Google and other search engines banned advertising it, and it requires DOH approval to have much quantity of it.

Making explosives out of it is extremely difficult and dangerous. Most who try only hurt themselves in the process.

I think it would be a difficult case to prove possession of two chemicals that if mixed could make an explosive would be a difficult case if the chemicals are legal to have and have other usages. I would think it would take things in writing showing intent or other items that also could be used to make containment and a trigger.

I do believe there was an attempt to blow up an airliner over the USA with it, but the person only flash burned himself and was then put into submission by the passengers. Again, it is extremely difficult to use safely and correctly as an homemade explosive.

Fireworks eh? I'm guessing that word has a more figurative meaning for the man arrested.
