A tariff strategy against China is not inherently bad if there is yah know, a strategy.
Tariffs can be a tool when combined with industrial policy that can be effective if there is a specific industry that you wish to address.
I have no problem with trying to curb Chinas rise and to temper is ambition.
But to do so requires smart strategy and it requires allies and instead what do we get?
Blanket tariffs on China AND on your allies (as well as the rest of the world), as well as threatening the sovereign territory of some of those allies with annexation...
So I'm not sure what's accomplished by bringing this up.
Schumer too, not that long agoFLASHBACK: 30 years ago, Nancy Pelosi demanded Congress confront Chinese tariffs on American goods
An old video of Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., urging Congress to retaliate against China’s tariffs against the United States is going viral for how much it sounds like President Donald Trump’s current tariff policies.
The video, recorded on the House floor in June 1996, featured the lawmaker urging her colleagues to fight against the "status quo" trade policies that had contributed to America’s trade deficit with China. She specifically called on lawmakers to address the fact that American tariffs on Chinese goods paled in comparison to Chinese tariffs on U.S. goods.
"In terms of tariffs, it’s interesting to note that the average U.S. MFN [Most Favored Nation] tariff on Chinese goods coming into the United States is two percent, whereas the average MFN tariff on U.S. goods going into China is 35 percent."
The congresswoman asked, "Is that reciprocal?" She also went on to call the U.S.-China trade relationship a "job loser."..................

The thing here is that the Democrats have long been the party of protectionism and tariffs.
The GOP has expropriated that issue from them.
There really isn't a free trade party in the USA.
Just heard, I believe Stephen Miller being interviewed about the tariffs. Whoever it was, this White House aide was talking about slave labor in Vietnam, "a race to the bottom" etc. that these tariffs were designed to fight.
We would have heard the same from an aide to a President Harris.
The leftist politicians are all just raging piece of shit hypocrites. They are content with watching the country suffer if it means they can score political points...and they know the mindless rat party voters won't question any of it.Schumer too, not that long ago

When were we suffering? The leftist politicians are all just raging piece of shit hypocrites. They are content with watching the country suffer if it means they can score political points...and they know the mindless rat party voters won't question any of it.
The problem now is that, because of inaction over the last 40 years, not only do we have problems with China, but we also have problems with our "allies".A tariff strategy against China is not inherently bad if there is yah know, a strategy.

So explain how you conclude that all conservatives are MAGA?? Returner in disguise? No. Actually I have been a member of a pretty conservative forum for quite a few years. I wanted to get different perspectives and like to read ideas of others and so I'm partaking in this forum.MAGA who claims to be "very conservative" says the fact that Democrat once suggested use of strategic tariffs against China means that any amount of tariffs on any amount of countries for any reason is perfectly fine. This MAGA also puts "liberty" in their account name.
I like when a DP newbie (or as is often the case, a returner in disguise) shows what to expect from them in their early posts, @libertyrose
That's the one thing I can thank you for
As for the rest, the following is more than it deserves:
And then a usual suspect, not to be left out of imaginary lib-owning, chimes in by saying that really this is all the Democrats' fault.
No conservatives are MAGA. MAGA is populism, and no conservative would go for that sort of weak-sister idolatry. So explain how you conclude that all conservatives are MAGA??

Or we could make the point that Pelosi was arguing for CONGRESS to act as a deliberative body who's job it is to consider such tariffs in a bill that gets written in a committee and amended in committee, and sent to a House floor for even more amending, and then goes to the Senate committee which amends it, and sends it to the Senate floor for more deliberation, and then if it passes it goes to conference for more consideration... She was not arguing for tariffs by executive order,A tariff strategy against China is not inherently bad if there is yah know, a strategy.

I sense hostility directed at me which is both sad and silly -- you don't know me and I just started posting in here. To each his own.
"See....liberals did it tooooooo!"Did Ms. Pelosi OPPOSE tariffs by Executive order?
She was Speaker a few times. What did she do to remove that Congressionally delegated authority from the president?

Geez, did all that just scramble your ability to respond?Post #19
First start naming the executive orders assigning such tariffs unilaterally. Then we can look and see if she was Speaker at the time.Did Ms. Pelosi OPPOSE tariffs by Executive order?

The point is about you, and if you are walking and talking like a MAGA......the problem is not our perception.all conservatives are MAGA?
